Average customer review:Product Description
Northern Soul has been described as the longest running fad in the history of British music culture. What began as an underground 60s Mod scene in unlicensed, no-frills clubs in the north west of England became the youth craze of the mid-70s. Northern Soul has confounded its critics by surviving, and growing into an adult dance scene whose followers share a passion for the music of Black America unrivalled anywhere else in the world. Packed with memorabilia, behind-the-scenes facts, and interviews covering artists from the Motown days right up to current chart acts like Fatboy Slim, Too Darn Soulful is the definitive history of a dance scene that refuses to die.

Essential reading for all soulies
For those who weren't there the author is successful in giving some idea of what it was (and is) like to be involved with the northern soul scene. There are vivid descriptions of the allnighters and clubs, the people attending and their own personal stories, and of course the music. The drug element had to be included, but it is tackled in a very "grown up" way. Why some did and why some didn't, what the consequences were, and how big a part the drug culture played in the demise of the big allnighter venues. Included are various favourite playlists from DJ's and fans alike, and the tales of the lengths some will go to and the price they will pay to get their hands on the vinyl. He touches on the conflict between DJ's,the listeners, the dancers and the media as to what the definition of Northern soul really is, where it came from and where its going. Personally I'm still none the wiser but it's still a cracking read!
A corker of a book!
Great book for northern soul, and even non northern soul fans alike. To be honest, i am not sombody who reads a great deal of books, but because when in my youth i traveled to allnighters i had to give this a go. I did not know what to expect but im sure glad i did, so i say to you old soulies, (and new alike) buy this book because it sure will give you a pleasurable feeling through your body, much better than a few dexies! great stuff.
second hand book, first class buy.
I can't be arsed with these reviews. It was a cheap, second hand book-and the condition was accurately described. I am certainly not disappointed and will be buying from amazon again. Keep it over 125 bpm and stomp on brothers.
