Customer Reviews
Simonson's Thor is great, but the print could be better
Many claim that Walter Simonson's run on Marvel Comics' "The Mighty Thor" presents the definite Thor stories, and although I cannot claim being a loyal follower of the ongoing comic, I must nevertheless agree. Simonson puts the Norse Mythology into work for his stories in a way that few Thor writers I have read manage. I would thus say that this is not necessarily just a comic for readers of the superhero genre, but also for those who like cosmic fantasy and myths in general (as long as the latter have an open mind). This compilation collects "The Mighty Thor" issues 337-348, which includes the Ballad of Beta Ray Bill (previously released as a separate paperback). The introduction of Beta Ray Bill and the changes it causes to Thor's existence on Earth is a fantastic opening on Simonson's part, and the following stories are equally fascinating.
On the bad side, Marvel Comics has not treated these stories with the respect they command. The paper quality is not the same top notch material used in, for instance, "Fantastic Four Visionaries: John Byrne" or "Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller" volumes 1-3. Whereas these other Visionaries books use nice glossy paper, this collection has been printed a rougher non-glossy paper... In my opinion, such a mistake in a comic (especially an expensive trade paperback like this) should have been corrected and the flawed copies withdrawn from the market. However, if you can live with these beauty spots, the stories in this collection does make it well worth buying.
One last note that might be of interest, the stories in this volume are not self-contained. The collection ends with a cliff hanger that would make some makers of television series green with envy. As of yet, Marvel has not, to my knowledge, released a second volume, so if you do not like uncertain waiting for the end of the story, it might be a plan to wait with purchasing this item until you know for sure that Marvel will publish a second volume.
Top notch
Have to agree with the previous review, this book contains an absolutely storming sequence of stories, with not a single duff issue.
There are some little niggles with the print - particularly there's one page where the odd and even side have been swaped so things happen in the wrong order. On that account I'd give 4.5 out of 5 but let's round it up to 5 because you don't get stories that good very often!
