Customer Reviews

fun read like comics should be5
I picked this up in the trades after reading great reviews (one review was "without a doubt, the best Marvel ongoing series of the year") and I have to say I agree with the rave reviews.

A bit of background - Richard Rider is an ordinary young man from NY who gets selected to become a Nova Centurion (inter-galactic police/peace keepers). He was in the young super hero team the New Warriors (that's where I first came across him) and had his own series too. But generally he's been a very cool character who has been underused in Marvel comics.

This trade colects #1-7 of the latest ongoing series. It picks up after the epic Annihilation cross-over written by Giffen et al, which, in my opinion, is far superior to Marvel's other Bendis driven recent cross-overs (M-day, Civil War, Secret Invasion, etc). The Annihilation wave has devestated the galaxy and wiped out the entire Nova Corps except Richard Rider. Rider now finds himself in possesion of the entire Nova Corps power (which is a lot!) and the Xandarian Worldmind (a super-computer that contains all the knowledge of the now destroyed homeworld of the Nova Corps, Xandar). Richard is now patrolling the galaxy alone and his adventures take him to Earth (and a battle with the Thunderbolts) and the Kree empire and straight into the deadly Phalanx and another great cross-over, Annihilation Conquest!

This is excellently written (by British writers Abnett and Lanning) fast-paced, thrill a minute comic book stuff. It's refreshing to get away from the de-compressed over dialogued Bendis-type marvel comics that try too hard to not be comics. Most of all the protagonist, Rider, is likable and heroic, an ordinary guy thrust into duties of a cosmic scale and matters almost beyond his comprehension, but he seems to deal with it and do it all in the right way. This is a guy who almost single handedly saved the galaxy but still misses his mother's cooking!

One possible criticism is that the art isn't at the top standard, however it still suits the book and Adi Granov's covers are amazing. There is also the inevitable Green Lantern comparison, but the human traits of Richard Rider (a Marvel trade mark) make him a more interesting, if less iconic, character than Hal Jordan's Green Lantern.

Pick this up if you're into sci-fi or super heroics, I've already ordered vol 2! If you enjoy it try Annihilation and also the excellent Green Lantern Sinestro Corps War.
