Customer Reviews

A sonic blast from the past4
Birdland were without a doubt the most exciting band on the indie scene from 1989 to 1991. Their live shows were legendary for the sheer energy they blasted out at their audience.Four stick thin figures with identical bleached blonde pudding bowl haircuts leaping up and down in synch while unleashing a frenzied punk noise that wore its NYC punk roots on its shoulders. 20 minute concerts and amashed equipment were commonplace and expected from an ever growing army of fans egging them on to more mischief and destruction.

This double CD takes me right back to a time when Birdland were always in the music weeklies and always on tour. 38 songs that remind me of the intensity and the rush that guitar based music can give you.

Okay, some of the tracks from their only (self titled) LP are weaker than those found on the first three singles as they swap the blitzkrieg fuzz thrash for a more traditional kind of rock, but they do have their place. But it is the first three singles, "Hollow Heart", "Paradise" and "Sleep With Me" (a top 40 hit in the days when indie bands in the charts were more of a rarity) that make this compilation a must have.
