Not what you may think
Don't expect to start learning Old English from this book. As it says on the back: The purpose of this general introduction to Old English is not to deal with the teaching of Old English but to dispel some misconceptions about the language and to give an outline of its structure and its literature.
If I had known that I would have bought something else. It is much better as an introduction to the literature than the language. It does do what it says and I suppose it does it well but, I repeat, it would have been useful to know that in advance.

Useful for students.
This book provides a highly useful introduction to the language of Old English and its literature. For new students this subject can be very difficult to grasp, and many are put off when they see how alien the structure of the language is to modern English. The author does a very good job at undoing some of the confusion and easing the first time student into an otherwise innaccesible subject.
