Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter.
The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles
Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat
World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever
The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes

The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world.

Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity.

Key Features
  • Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
  • Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
  • Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
  • Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
  • Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Manufacturer's Description
Call of Duty: World at War completely changes the rules of engagement by redefining WWII gaming and thrusting players into the final tension-filled, unforgiving battles against a new ferocious enemy in the most dangerous and suspenseful action ever seen in WWII.

Powered by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare technology, Call of Duty: World at Warbrings an uncensored edge to combat, as soldiers face the most harrowing and climatic European and Pacific battles in which an enemy, who knows no surrender and no retreat, will fight to the last breath, unleashing an arsenal of lethal surprising tactics. Peril and danger lurk throughout the battlefield as players combat the unknown risk of the new chaos of battle.

From the remains of Russia and the ruins of Berlin, to the beach and jungles of the deadly Pacific Theater, the volatile action takes on added depth as players employ new features that previously were only-available in multiplayer, including perks, rankings and online stats in up-to full four-player cooperative gameplay. New infantry and vehicle-based weapons, like the potent flamethrower, bring the battlefield ablaze.

Final Battles: Call of Duty: World at War forces players to survive the final climactic days of a world at war to thwart the advance of Axis powers on multiple fronts from Europe to the Pacific – delivering the hallmark Call of Duty cinematic intensity on a worldwide scale. Play as a U.S. Marine or Russian conscript across a variety of European and Pacific infantry, vehicle and airborne missions. An all new depth of WWII-era combat variety, from the tactics and weapons to the unique and varying locations that traverse the ruins of Western Europe all the way to the harsh, wetlands of Imperial Japan, immerses gamers into an adrenaline-filled, epic struggle.

Co-Op Campaign Mode: "No One Fights Alone" takes on new meaning as players can complete the entire single player campaign with up to four players online or two players via split-screen (both online and offline). Strategizing with others provides gameplay diversity, replayability and engagement. Complete unique co-op challenges to earn rewards and bragging rights.

Addictive Multiplayer: Call of Duty: World at War continues the addictive and leading class-based multiplayer action. The addition of vehicles to the highly-successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer that already includes persistent experience, player rankings, upgradeable weapons, squad-based gameplay, map scripting, customizable classes and perks, brings a new dimension to Call of Duty online warfare.

Loving it so far!5
Call of Duty 4 was (and still is) one of my favourite games. I spent countless hours playing online and I loved the single player. COD4 was so good that even the Mrs found the multiplayer a 'good waste of time' and at times I had to fight to get a game! I'm happy to say that in many respects COD:WAW is just as good as its predecessor. Here's what I've found so far:

THE GOOD
- Controls and 'feel' to the menus is pretty much the same as COD4 so you can get strait into the action
- You can now play the campaign in co-op
- Veteran difficulty still offers a challenge for experienced gamers
- Online ranking up system updated, there's more categories to earn points, you prestige at 65 (rather than 55 in COD4)
- Tanks are available in the multiplayer! They aren't invincible however and I feel they don't unbalance the game at all.
- Online maps, so far I have found to be very good. Only 1 that I don't like (Makin)
- Game play is still very good both on and offline. Not exactly the same as COD4 but close enough.
- Graphics are excellent. Not better than COD4 but lets be honest that would have been very difficult
- Instead of UAV, Airstrike and Chopper you now have Recon Plane, Artillery Bombardment and Dogs. Love calling in the dogs.
- New perks and a new perk catogary for vehicles
- A boot camp option when playing online that you play from rank 1-8 for new players

THE BAD
- Still no online achievements
- Most of the single player achievements have to be completed as single player, you can't get them by playing co-op
- Online, rifles seem pretty useless (not sniper rifles). You hit people and it doesn't register and have to get a head shot to kill them!
- Have experienced some 'bullet lag' online that I didn't in COD4. Possible teething problem?
- Perks like juggernaut are still there. IMO with them adding a boot camp option they should have limited the 'noob' perks to the boot camp and make them unavailable once you start playing properly
- The multiplayer on this game will take up days and days of my life!.... wait is that such a bad thing?

The best way of describing it is think COD4, swap it over to WW2 and then tweak it a little bit. Its not better or worse, its different. I'd highly recommend this to any wanting a worth while online multiplayer experience. There are games (GOW2, Dead Space) that can offer better single player experiences but as GOW2 online seems to be a bit of a dud the COD:WAW looks like the new king of the multiplayer!

EDIT: A couple of months on I would just like to add that altough it is a worthy addition to the COD series, it frankly isnt as addictive or as good as COD4. The single player is pretty poor to be honest, gets worse as you go on. And there have been several glitches in the online play (hopefully to be patched soon). Still worth getting but doesn't hold a candle to COD4.

The best First Person shooter i have ever played5
i've been playing games for over 20 years and while i know that doesn't mean i know best i can safely say this game is the BEST i have ever played!

Although made by a different company it follows COD4's course in both multiplayer and single player mode.

Multiplayer - Think COD4 with the original game modes and points system, new guns and new maps, the maps are stunning, very vast with mixed landscapes creating an entire new experience eachtime you play a map.
I was expecting the guns to be harder to use but it is NOT the case, being WWII theres no ACOG scopes or dot sights, instead there are weapon attachments such as glass sights, bipods, bayonets etc etc.
Instead of UAV you have a Reconissance Aircraft
Instead of Air Strikes with 5 kills you call in Artillary Strikes
Instead of Helicopter with 7 kills you call in Hounds/Dogs (Brilliant!!)

Basically it is every bit as good as COD4 online if not better!

Single Player - reasonably linear gameplay here but certainly not dissimilar to COD4. the sound and graphics are absolutly amazing and the gameplay is deeply intense thorwing you into huge armies which you you have to fight through very aggressively.... i could go on and on but put bluntly it is completely mental!
i would recommend this game to anyone at all, if you fancy yourself as a hardcore gamer then up the difficulty and i garantee it will make you tired!

2 steps forward, 1 step back4
The Infinity Ward-produced COD2 was one of the finest FPS available on any platform. Sublime single player action and a consistantly enthralling storyline coupled with excellent (for the time) online multiplayer.

Along came Treyarch and the very mediocre COD3. Stupid AI, boring level design and a crappy story took the franchise a step backwards, but it was propped up by a strong mulitplayer offering.

Infinity Ward then blew COD3 out of the water with COD4. Although the single player mode was woefully short it was extremely intense and well made. The online multiplayer really set the standard offering of the most intense experiences over Xbox Live.

So here come Treyarch again. Have they learnt anything since COD3? Has the extra time in development made any difference (apparently COD3 was a rush job). Yes and no.

It's World War II again. Another game with M1 Garrand. Another COD with a tank mission. Another COD with splinter storyline than doesn't help build any empathy with the characters.

In fairness though the level design is a vast improvement on COD3. The Japanese/flamethrower missions are a blast and there is an underlying feeling of dread and danger throughout the Soviet missions. Airplane and tanks missions are nothing more than filler though. There's a lot more blood and dismemberment - which is nice! Presentation is all a bit too flash though, the cut-scenes/level intros detract from the sobering stories they are trying to tell.

Unfortunately, as with COD3, it's let down by Treyarch's approach to AI. Your comrades/squad are by far the most useless and unreliable I've come across to date. They stand in front of you and let enemy through to attack you, spend hours shooting but never actually kill anything, and worst of all - they push you out of cover directly into line of fire!

Enemy AI isn't much better. Treyarch stick with the chaining system that made COD3 such snooze-fest. Enemies will respawn and cover the same postions over and over until you cross The Magic Line that stops them, turning most of the game into a smoke-and-sprint to the next Magic Line or checkpoint.

The worst addition to the series though is, by far, grenade spamming. Apparently all enemies now carry at least 15 grenades each and have an uncanny ability to pitch grenades (a) at your feet despite you hiding against 4 foot cover and (b) not only at your retreat position, but the position you decided to move to because you knew the retreat position would be grenaded!! This isn't so much of a problem on the easier settings, but on Veteran it makes some levels ridiculously hard to the verge of impossible and extremely frustrating. Although Veteran on this COD is probably the easiest of the whole series certain sections are made 10 times more infuriating by grenade spamming (I'm looking at you Blowtorch & Corkscrew!!).

Multiplayer is pretty much a direct port from COD4, in fact it might as well be COD4:World War II. Decent enough maps but some really appalling respawn issues and glitches that should have been ironed out in beta testing.

Overall this is a decent game and Treyarch have improved on COD3 but haven't really added anything of worth to the series - apart from maybe a flamethrower.

Please, no more World War II!!
