cracking little doozy
I just got this today and am so impressed. When I was looking for an mp3 I found the version without the radio, which had excellent five star reviews. So imagine my surprise when after a little digging I came across this one - with a radio but cheaper!
It has shed loads of settings for people who like that sort of thing. Personally I like to turn off all the flashy lights and sound effects, and with a decent set of speakers the sound is great (I've not bothered trying the ones in the box as I don't really like pod phones).
Setting it up is a piece of cake: It come with software on a CD - but again, I like to keep thing simple so I havn't bothered with it, I just plugged it into a USB socket and it charged itself, while the computer recognises it as a mass storage device into which you can simply drag and drop any files you want to keep on it. All the music files are recognised when it's switched on and easily played.
Radio works well, pretty good sound quality despite being in a poor reception area where my expensive deck has trouble sometimes. It also has a voice recorder, which wasn't mention on the description when I bought it - a nice little extra!
All in all I'm really impressed, it has everything I wanted in a neat and tiny package, with no requirements for special software and at a price that is soo much better than some better named brands - awesome!
And I thought Creative's Zen Nano was good...
Well, what can I say. I got this for Christmas as a replacement for my Creative Zen Nano (which had 'finally', after a year, had its battery latch broken off, and the case cracked) which although still worked, I knew for the same price I could get a player that was even better value. And then I stumbled across this. £20 cheaper, it seemed a bargain, and I wasn't disappointed.
This little doozy is roughly the width of your thumb, and has a lovely shiny gloss finish, though I can see it in time wearing off. The packaging itself struck me first - it has the same dimensions of the CD included, and pretty much just as thick as the player. In fact, if the CD wasn't provided (which they might as well of, as the software is nothing short of useless) the packaging could be as little as say, the face of a floppy disk.
The play time for the battery is very good, and I've had no queries. People put down this 'encased' style battery, saying it's awkward that you can only use it on a PC. That, I cannot understand. If you're working on your PC, or any PC for that matter, all you have to do is plug it in while you're working, and let it charge up. Their is no need to install additional drivers - it's simply plug and play, as the computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device. Therefore, adding music (and files for that matter) is as easy as switching a light on. Though my computer only supports USB 1.0, I can still transfer an album in 25 seconds - impressive? No doubt.
The screen quality is top notch for such a small player - a better resolution than most, and provides nice, sharp, crystal lettering. It's the same style as the latest Sony Walkmans, with the black background and white lettering, which has proven to be a saviour when the sun shines and you're out and about (for the short period of time it does actually shine in England). Their is also the option to have a nice blue LED light up around the USB plug cap, though the excitement does wear off. Samsung describe it as an all singing, all dancing light display, but this is far from the truth. The amount of options and features clearly makes this for, me the, the best value player on the market, yet the lack of instructions makes it a very modest player for such a reputable brand. Intro times, sleep modes, good playlist options, over 10 Equalizer settings (all of which are very distinct) and more, not even mentioned in any instructions.
The inclusion of a "User Button" was an ingenious idea too. At the top of the player is a button that you can set to which ever option you like to change regularly. So for example, I chose the list of EQ settings, so that whenever I want to change the presentation of the sound, I just press the User Button and until I come to the desired EQ setting - perfect! Another fantastic idea was the lock feature. Unlike other players, with mobile phone style locking in that you press 2 buttons - one after the other, this player has a switch. The result means you also cannot accidentally switch the player off OR what I like best, on, and so slap your head on the bus when you realise its been on all day (a problem from experience, made worse with people talking unnecessarily loud) This feature is also less fiddly than rival players.
There is no doubt that the sound quality on this player could give the iPod a run for its money, and pathetic prices. Clear and atmospheric, it feels like its coming from all around you, should you use one of the 3-D EQ options. The bass is excellent and very clear, though the headphones included do leak alot of sound, but they are surprisingly good quality for a cheap mid-range priced MP3 player. Some have mentioned the awkwardness of the headphone socket - that being the bottom of the screen. Again, I have to disagree, as the technical structure of the player would make it tough to position it elsewhere. And since it's so slim, it's still easy to take in and out of a pocket. That is except for when I'm wearing my Levi's 501's... In which case, and inside jacket pocket does just fine, since it's the same size as a cigarette lighter.
I just couldn't be happier with the player, and the Creative Zen Nano just doesn't compare at all as a competitor of similar prices and sizes; especially in terms build quality. And what about the iPod Nano as a competitor? For me, this is still the winner for its value. You can get an iPod Nano for twice the price, but what do you get? Half the features, poor 'long term' durability, and a volume control that cant help but say "In 30 years, blame me if your ears are bad". Apple stated they performed tests to prove how durable the Nano was, but I just don't think throwing one out of a speeding car, or running over it with a speeding car can overcome the everyday problems I hear of friends accidentally sitting on them (whilst it was in their trouser back-pocket) or to simply attempt to switch it on one day, to find its dead. Sure, a colour screen, a design that's more modern than Bill Gate's home computer, and simple software all worthy things. But when a reputable brand marks up the price of what it's 'really' worth by around 40%, you wonder why they're so popular. So, I'll leave the multi-coloured £120 slices plastic and aluminium to the fashion conscience people. At least when I use this on my next bus ride, I'm not going to be eyed up by thieves, and my little `Samsung' (a nickname just isn't possible from YP-U2R - advantage for the `iPod') won't be in the fear of `dying' on me.
Quality item at a reasonable price,great buy,recommended.
My Son had purchased an iPod copy from a well-known internet auction site for £26.It broke second day! So for Xmas we purchased this MP3 Player because of the Samsung brand and reasonable price. We don't pretend to know much about MP3 Players but we have purchased a lot of Samsung Products over the years and found them top-notch.Quite simply, the Player exceeded our expectations by a mile,it's funky with flashing lights, drag'n'drop from your PC,it's looks great,it's tiny and most surprising was the quality of the earphones which give superb sound. So many times, you read people buy an MP3 only to then have to purchase a decent set of earphones to replace the poor ones supplied, not with this Player.Simply plug the Player into the PC to charge the battery. It can run for days without a recharge depending on your use.I can highly recommend this MP3 to everybody who doesn't want to pay the inflated prices of other MP3's on the market.
