Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
In this indie film sure to make audiences shriek, the horror is just beginning when a young couple is carjacked by an escaped inmate and his lover. But the criminal (Shea Whigham, WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY) isn't the most dangerous thing on the trip; a mysterious, parasitic creature stalks the two couples, and a small convenience store doesn't prove to be much of a haven from the menace. Toby Wilkins, who won awards for his short film STARING AT THE SUN, makes his feature directorial debut with SPLINTER.

"It's okay, we're cutting your arm off!"5
This is a fun and original horror. It is full of gore, well scripted, has a magnificent cast, fantastic character development, awesome special effects and some spectacular gross-out moments! It takes a classic horror scenario (survivors holed up in a building - in this case a petrol station) but the concept of the parasitic monster brings flare to the genre. If you enjoy films like The Mist, The Thing and Night of the Living Dead, then you too will love this.

Get away from all that torture stuff4
I have to say that Splinter was quite a good film. Could have done with being 10-20 mins longer, but it was a very good and fairly original premise. When I say 'original' I mean it gets away from what is the new 'torture' genre that seems to be flooding the film industry.

The bones cracking thing will make you wince, but it's all gun fun. This is a film that I could watch again and again. I hope there's a "Splinter 2"!!

Tension filled, edge-of-the-seat stuff!!4
I (like many people) thought this would be another trashy horror movie with a non-existent storyline and just lots of gratuitous blood and gore. I wasn't expecting much really but wow, what a brilliant film!

It's a story of two couples forced together through unusual circumstances - they must work together if they want to survive. The parasitic 'creature' in the film is like nothing I've ever seen before. I don't want to give anything away as a lot of the shock comes from seeing what happens to the characters and the ensuing surprise as they (and we) try to figure out what's going on.

The acting is very good - the characters are fully rounded with depth and good back story. The entire film is extremely well-paced and once the tension starts (15 minutes into the film), it doesn't let up until the very end. The film is a little gruesome but it's original and works well in terms of creating suspense and shock. The special effects are excellent because they are properly integrated and work well with the sound effects - it's all very believable which is why the film works so well as a tense horror.

You will no doubt enjoy this film if you have enjoyed the story/style of such films as 'The Mist', 'The Breed', '30 Days of Night' and 28 Days Later. A real surprising treat of a film and a must for all thriller-horror fans!
