Customer Reviews
An expensive baby monitor marred by very poor design
P>We bought this expensive digital baby monitor for our baby and wish we hadn't. The demands of artistic appearance have obvioulsy completely outweighed functionality. The problems we have found are:
1) the belt clip on the monitor unit is too low (below the centre of gravity) so the unit flops over and falls off your belt. As a result, you cannot keep it on your belt, you have to carry it about with you.
2) the monitor cannot stand up on its own because its base is artisitically rounded. You have to lay it down on its back. As a result you cannot read the temperature display easily.
3) when it is on the charger the monitor goes 'click' every minute or so. It is loud enough to keep you awake at night. This means you have to let it run on batteries at night, even if the charger is right there.
4) the batteries don't last the night. Because of (3) you can't leave it on the charger at night, but you get woken in the small hours by the 'charge me' warning. Then you have to put it on the charger and put up with the clicks.
5) where we are (Cambridge) the monitor (only when it is on the charger, but wheter the charger is plugged into the mains or not) picks up the local aipport beacon (on all channels) so we get slow morse code - this is actually quite interesting but it does mean you cannot hear the baby, plus it keeps you awake. So for us this has the same effect as (3) - we have to run it on batteries at night.
6) it is a clumsy operation to put the monitor onto the charging cradle. it doesn't just 'drop in' nicely but has to be very carefully placed there.
In its favour we would say that it is quite 'foolproof' in the sense that if either end is switched off (or set to teh wrong channel) then the other gives a warning; it is not posisble to think your are mmonitoring when you are not. The range also seems quite good and the sound quality is fine.
Initially excellent but......
We have had this monitor for about 2 years now and for the first 6 months it was excellent, then suddenly we started experiencing random loud feedback and screeching sounds from the parent unit. Interestingly enough these only happen when it is out of it's cradle and not charging??? About a year ago the talk back button broke so we can't talk to my daughter and this last week there seems to be a problem with the charger.
This may all sound negative but on a whole we have been fairly happy with the monitor (once we figured out that replacing it on the charger stopped the feedback).
If asked would I buy it again?? The answer is considering the price I'd probably pay a little more and go for a digital one in preference but if it was on sale I probably would buy a new one.
Very happy with this monitor
I have to say I bought this monitor last week and have been very satisfied with it. I haven't experienced any of the problems the other reviewers mention: I don't know if the design has slightly changed since the previous reviews were written, but the belt clip on mine works fine and the unit stays on my belt, also the parent unit has a flat bit at the bottom so it stands up when it is out of the charging cradle and you can see the display and temp. without having to pick it up. In terms of functionality it does the job it's meant to do - monitors the noise and temperature in the baby's room, and it does it well. I haven't had any problems with poor sound or interference, and we live in a three storey house - can move around the whole house and it doesn't get out of range at all. The interference problems must simply be down to environmental interference based on where you live. I guess the only solution to this is to get the platinum - which is digital, not analogue - or move house!
