Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
This monitor is fantastic! After making the extremely hard decision to move our three month old to his own room, all i can say is that this monitor has been a god send!

Yes we're first time parents, and so at first you are stuck with the question of do you buy a monitor with night vision, with plates that you can monitor your babies breathing, or do you relax and listen to your friends that the more your monitor has the more you will worry! Well we listened to them all and opted for the Platinum!

Yes it monitors the temperature, but this is good for knowing exactly what to put your baby in to sleep -- will they be too hot too cold -- with this you know, it also has a light display which shows if your baby is crying, a vibration alert, and also you can choose to turn the volume up and listen to your babies every move. It really is great, we can hear our little fella sleeping from the comfort of our own bed!

The monitor also has a nightlight, a feeding/sleeping/changing timer -- which can be useful. It has a very cool function of talkback, so you can speak to your baby through the monitor -- a little freaky for a young baby but extremely good fun for scaring/freaking partners, friends and relatives!

All in all, this monitor is great, it really does mean you can have a good nights sleep! A yummy first time mummy--Amazon.co.uk

Manufacturer's Description

Walkabout Platinum Digital

Trust Tomy to make sure you and your baby are never out of reach. Day and night, you’ll be the first to know if baby makes a sound.

Leave your little one to sleep soundly with the Baby Unit nearby. Then monitor even the quietest of sounds on your Parent Unit.

"Keeping baby close to you, always"

Wear it on your belt or place it close to hand, from the top of the house to the bottom of the garden. So, when you need some time to yourself, enjoy all the freedom and flexibility you want with all the peace of mind you need.

Working closely with parents, Tomy have now produced the Walkabout Platinum Digital monitor, packed with clever features – designed with you and your baby in mind.

The ultimate monitor with 100% digital DECT Technology:
  • 100% interference free with 120 auto-select channels – ensures crystal clear reception.
  • 300m range - a stronger signal so the parent unit can easily be carried around the house and the garden for flexible, portable monitoring.
  • 2 way communication – handy for when baby only needs a word of reassurance from afar, and to extend the usefulness of the product into the toddling years and beyond.
  • Privacy guaranteed – in-built scrambling device with 65,000 unique combinations ensures no-one can listen in.

  • PLUS

  • Sound-sensitive light display – stay alert to baby’s needs even with the sound turned down.
  • Nightlight on baby unit, which can be remotely operated by the parent unit – no need to disturb baby using the main light in the nursery.
  • Recharging docking station for parent unit – no hassle with batteries.
  • LCD display with temperature read

Tomy monitors are not just for babies – people up and down the country are using monitors daily for other purposes, such as:
  • Toddler monitoring (keep a listen out to the little devils as they play in their rooms).
  • In-house communication (maybe for resting elderly relatives up-stairs).
  • Outdoor communication (for those who spend more time in the shed or garage than they do indoors!).

A great combination of features with excellent performance and clarity of sound – from Tomy, the name parents trust for baby monitors.

Mains adaptors included. For portable use the Baby Unit requires 4 x AA batteries (not included).
    Manufacturers age recommendation: 0+.

No, please don't buy it - let me save you from this awful product2
I've had two of these and eventually saw sense and got another brand. This product is so poor it's prompted me to write my first review.

    The plus points:
+ It's easy enough to use
+ Sound quality by dint of being digital is good (none of that hiss that you got with the older analogue units)
    + Temperature reading useful
+ Good control of volume level
(I'm starting to scrape the barrel, so...)

    The negatives:
    - The battery life is pathetically short and critically not long enough for an evening's monitoring, meaning that if you're staying away you need to set up the charger which is often a pain; the battery is the type from a home cordless phone so not easy to have another and keep it charged to extend usage
    - It turns itself on when you're travelling - you can't actually turn it off and all it needs is one quick tap on the parent unit power button and it's on again; this means that it does an annoying beep-beep in your bag (just the thing for stressful car journeys ;-) as it can't find the baby unit and when you get to where you're going the battery will be flat; I made a little cover that I Blu-tac'ed over the button but even this didn't solve the problem all the time; in the end I just had to take the battery out when we travelled with it, which means using a screwdriver and adding to the palaver of setting up camp when you're travelling
    - The button layout isn't logical making it hard to find or press the correct button, particularly in the dark; the buttons should be recessed to prevent accidental presses, particularly when it's in your pocket; this doesn't sound like a big deal but if you're going to use the timer feature (which is actually very handy) then you're certainly going to reset it by accident rendering it useless; a press-and-hold to reset the timer would fix this; ergonomics and product design get 0/10
    - It's not very durable - drop it and the screen cover is likely to pop out; this is held in with tiny fragile tabs that just break off; it's not fixable so you'll need to tape this back on
    - Range not brilliant - has tendency to lose connection and then the parent unit starts beeping
    - It can give false readings - both of mine, after a while, gave random erroneous 'blips' into the red on the level meter; this means that you have to turn up the volume to check if it is really the baby crying; in the end you can't trust it.
    - You can't stand it up when it's not in the charger - minor, perhaps, but annoying as you need to pick it up to look at the screen

I couldn't face a third one so I bought a BT Digital Baby Monitor 150 which is durable, reliable, feature packed, you can actually turn it off, and the best bit is that the batteries last for 12 hours plus (and they're standard NiMH AAs). Please spare yourself the frustration and don't buy this annoying and fatally flawed Tomy item.

    Very good monitor4
After trying numerous baby monitors, this is the best most reliable one I have come across. The sound is clear, it picks up babys breathing and you can hear it load and clear. Some of the monitors on the market that are digital, I found to have poor reception, poor batterty life, and not so crystal clear sound. This has been by far the best. I would recommend this to all if you are considering a reliable, quality monitor.

It has a beautiful blue starry night light and has loads of additional features such as 2 way talk, temperature monitor and many many more. The baby unit can also be portable which quite a few in the same price range do not. In my opinion this is the best.

    Fantastic Product!5
Having had several baby monitors for my severally disabled, now adult daughter, who also has seizures, and having used analogue monitors, which are still in use and one digital monitor, which is also in use, whilest waiting for this particular one to come out, I can only say what the others have said, it really is the best one on the market, very loud and clear, easy to turn the sound down, very clear with no interference whatsoever, and much louder than the other digital monitor I have. I can highly recommend this one, whether it be for someone caring for an adult or someone with children. I also like the fact that I can communicate with my daughter. Money well spent, in my humble opinion. I have a second cradle with cable, so that I can charge it downstairs, the other cradle and cable is upstairs in my bedroom, so that I only have to take the monitor up and down the stairs. The other good thing is, if it is noisy, you have the possibility to have the monitor on to vibrate instead of sound, and you still have the lights showing when there is any sound. I say well done to Tomy for such a great product, the wait was worth it!
