George Best died in November 2005, just six months short of his 60th birthday. Widely regarded as a footballing genius and one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game this rare and insightful programme gives an up close and personal look at the life and times of Best, both on and off the pitch as seen through the eyes of the people who knew him best. Signing for Manchester United at the age of 17 Bests career went from strength to strength going on to win the Football League Championship and European Cup as well as winning 37 caps for Ireland. In 1968 Best was also named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association, the youngest player to do so at the age of 21 as well as European Footballer of the Year. Ultimately it was his celebrity lifestyle that started a steady decline in his career, his extravagant lifestyle leading to problems with alcoholism and his demise in 2005. In this definitive and in depth programme George's father Dickie Best tells his son's story, charting his journey from sporting hero to alcoholic. Dickie provides a family's unique perspective on one of the rarest and most precious football talents ever seen and one of the sport's first true international celebrities, quoted as saying "I was the one who took football off the back pages and put it on to page one". This programme features archive training and match footage as well as first time and exclusive access to the Best families home cine footage and photos. It also features personal and intimate scenes from the actual funeral and extensive interviews with the Best family including George's Father Dickie and Sister.

Customer Reviews
NOT MUCH FOOTBALL, JUST PERSONAL MEMORIES.
This dvd is of a programme shown last year, with some extra interviews with George`s nearest and dearest added. If you are looking for a dvd filled with his greatest goals etc, then you would be better off buying one of the other releases, GENIUS MAVERICK LEGEND, for example. But if you want to hear personal stories and just how much he meant to his father and sister, this is the one to get. Sorely missed.
Beautiful
What a great programme.
There is virtually no football footage here. But that's really not what this programme is about, or what it should be about! This is a rememberance of George Best, the man. A fond look back at his life, not just his career.
What I liked most about this articular programme was the respect it showed. There were some increadibly touching interviews with family as well as home video from his family life.
For anyone wanting to remember the best of George Best, this is it.
Very disappointing
The DVD was disappointing, there was hardly any football footage in it just interviews with his family. There was hardly a mention of any of the more contraversial aspects either. This will sit in the cabinet and never be watched again.
