Editorial Reviews
From the Author
I hope everyone will find something to enjoy among the suggestions in this book. I have revisited every corner of the Vendee unearthing new attractions and returning to check out old favourites. I share with readers my favourite shops, markets and - for the first time - restaurants, and present a Top Twenty list of places that I could not bear you to miss...

Fantastic
Angela Bird has certainly done her homework when writing this book,my hubby and I have just returned from 5 weeks in the Vendee and definatley found this book very helpful. We found many interesting and beautiful places had a fantastic time, it was great having some background information about the areas we visited, we loved Sallertaine, such a tranquil place, stunning, we even took a trip in the canoe at the salt lakes. My hubby and I would highly recomend this book, it was down to earth interesting and a very useful guide to have when visiting the Vendee no matter how many times you go.
Out of date and inaccurate
I bought this book earlier in the year based on the reviews on Amazon and I have just returned from a holiday in the Vendee for which I have used it. Putting the book into practise showed up some major flaws.
Much of the information is inaccurate; in many cases this may be due to the book being published so long ago (2004, so 4 years old for my 2008 holiday). Opening hours of some attactions and market days for some towns were wrong for instance. Phone & web details are given for most attractions & towns and I did research some of them before I travelled, but not all of them and I didn't have internet access while away. But surely if you can't rely on at least reasonable accuracy of this information in a guide book it's not much use.
The book builds every town and every attraction to levels that are rarely realised in practise. Apart from sending the reader on pointless trips to places which turn out to be of little interest it's difficult to spot the places that really are worth a visit.
All in all, I doubt if this book was as good as some reviews on here suggest even when it was new, but now the information in it is 4 years out of date it is obsolete. I would not recommend this book and even if an updated version is brought out, I'd be wary of it.
Our Vendee bible
Following a trawl of the internet sites before our trip to the Vendee i came across Angela Bird's Vendee site and the reccommended book. I purchased it and it was integral to us having a fantasic holiday. Knowing when markets were on, the better less developed areas of the Marshes to visit etc. It was our bible for the holiday and i can highly reccommend it.
