Editorial Reviews

Review
'Chris Rowen's thorough and engaging study reveals Tensho to not only be beautiful and fascinating but also accessible and relevant.' Jamie Clubb, Martial Arts Illustrated 'I've personally had the privilege of seeing Shihan Rowen perform Tensho and his mastery of the kata was revealed in every movement. I can honestly say it was one of the most impressive displays of kata I've ever seen! Not only was I taken aback by Shihan Rowen's physical skills, his in-depth explanation of the kata and its applications were equally inspring' Iain Abernethy, 5th Dan

1st Martial Arts Magazine
'A book that GoJu-Ryu stylists would enjoy as a guide to help improve technique in this fundamental Karate style.'

Doesn't fullfill expectations1
I must say I waited eagerly for this book. But it turned out to be a dissapointment.
This book turned out to be just one more book with lots of pictures hiding the lack of content.
Take for instance the chapter called: "Kata Tensho, a pictorial history". 19 pages of pictures of the author without relevance or any connection whatsoever with Tensho Kata...
The applications are at best, the same "karate vs. karate" stuff, we all know doesn't work.
If you are looking to learn the movements of this kata, then the book is ok. But if you are looking for an indepth study... this book does not do the kata justice.

Simply Brilliant!5
The definitive book on this vitally important karate kata. Easy to follow and very well written. I've seen Shihan Rowen perform and teach this kata and his skill in performance and depth of understanding was amazing. His mastery of the kata really comes across in the book and I highly recommend it to all karateka, regardless of style.

Highly recommended!5
I have found this book enjoyable, interesting and very useful- and continue to do so. It gives a simple explanation of the basics that comprise this kata, which allowed me to build up a working framework quite easily. However its rich and concise detail has ensured that I have returned to the book again and again on my path to mastering the form (ongoing!). It respects and acknowledges the ancient roots of kata Tensho with interesting philosophical and historical references, yet clarifies its effectiveness for use today with practical examples. Highly recommended!
