Product Description

There's something eerily familiar about Robosapien 1 that gives the collywobbles to those of use at gadgetshop HQ who are conversant in these matters. It's not just the seven independent servo motors in this ground-breaking bi-ped robot that give it lifelike movement. Nor the fact that it's fully tactile and responds to objects in its field of vision. It's that Robosapien is, undoubtedly, the shape of things to come. When NASA Mars rover scientist Mark Tilden and his cohort spent over $1 million developing a fully independent, walking, talking robot, they perfected an early form of BEAM technology in the process. BEAM - or Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, Mechanics - is a new branch of robotics that models biological behaviour and seeks to replicate it in hard-wired robots, setting aside conventional (and clumsy) computer control. Tilden's remarkable breakthrough not only renders Robosapien more lifelike, it enables him to perform over 80 complex actions on demand. With an independent right and left, Robosapien is designed to follow six different commands on each side, enabling a huge number of possible movement permutations, from high-fives to kung-fu actions, all governed by a fearsome remote master controller. The future, in no uncertain terms, is in your hands....

Manufacturer's Description

Feisty, moody and filled with personality, Robosapien is a humanoid with attitude that comes to life at your command and performs amazing tasks. Using the ergonomic remote control, you can command Robosapien to perform up to 67 pre-programmed functions including pick-up, throw, high-five, whistle, dance and three different karate moves.

Robosapien is fully programmable. He can perform a programmed chain of commands in any combination of moves that you select. For example, you can create your own dance sequence or program him to walk straight, turn left and give your buddy a high five.

The fully articulated Robosapien fluid biomechanical movements and pendulum walking motion makes his movements appear more human than robotic. This attribute separates Robosapien from less sophisticated entertainment robots on the market. Robosapien's impressive flexibility is evident as he walks in two different speeds, dances and easily handles 180 degree turns.

Robosapien comes equipped with two types of three pronged grippers, ribbed for increased traction. He can pick up objects such as cups, socks, pencils and other small light objects.

Sure to keep you on your toes, Robosapien reacts to both touch and sound signals from his environment. His Interactive Reflex System (IRF) uses a total of six sensors strategically located throughout his body to detect obstructions. Sensors in his feet allow him to recognize and avoid obstacles without help, as he moves backwards or forwards with ease. Select one of his sensor programs and Robosapien will respond to a sharp sound or to touch.

Fun at first, but gets boring!!!!!!!3
I saw Robosapien in a charity shop for 10 quid and snapped it up as it retails at 30. I have always wanted a Robosapien v2 instead, but thought at this price I might as well get the v1 while I can. Unfortunately the manual wasn't with it so I went on the wowwee website where I could read the instructions.
Heres a list of things both good and bad he can do:

*Walking: walking is good. It walks well on our rugs (They are thin) and on our wooden floor it is good. Though when its battery is getting low, sometimes it will walk very slowly.

*Batteries: Batteries last quite a long time, which is good because he takes 4 D batteries and 3 AAA. In fact I've had him at least 3 and a half
weeks and he's still going strong on the same batteries.

*Functions: He has a lot of functions, over 60 to be precise, which include: Burping, 3 different karate actions, dancing, 3 demos, arm movements, kicking (I still haven't worked out how to do it), roaring, programing steps that he repeats and stores in his touch sensors, whistle,
    picking up, throwing and more!!!

*Arm movements: His arm movements are limited. Sadly all you do to move his arms is press a button unlike the v2 where you have a joy stick and you can actually be fully in control of his them.

*He can't hear sounds-only when he is in listen mode where a tap to his body or a noise brings him to his normal mode

*He can't see things and he only talks caveman which you can't understand

*I find he gets quite boring after a while and I just returned to using my Roboraptor (another wowwee robot which I have also reviewed)

*Controls: Controls a easy to use. I didn't have the manual so I don't know how to make him kick and I don't know what sonic or execute buttons do. But overall you get used to the controls after about 30 to 40 mins.

*He does not have Free roam or any of the quite hi-tech stuff. Though he does have IR Sensors so if you have another wowwee robot and you have the roboremote you can copy a function from v1 onto the roboremote and use it with other wowwee robos. I do not know if that is exactly what the roboremote does but check out www.wowwee.com for more information.

So all in all he's a cool robot but gets quite boring after a while.
But I would get Robosapien v2 for just 11 pound more, who has many,
many more functions and actually speaks English!!! So there you have it
Robosapien a fusion of technology and personality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Kids love it!4
Got this present for an 11 years old boy and he absolutely adores it! He finds it fascinating, and I think it's much better than some computer games. Drives the parents crazy with the noise, but the number of programmable moves is simply pretty amazing!

    Best robot ever!5
I got this for Christmas in 2005 and have really enjoyed it since.
I like where it's sensors are located and I also enjoy the features, as some of the things it does are really amazing. The people I know seem to get bored of it quickly- but that's just because they are boring people!
He has fallen over quite a few times, but doesn't even have a single scratch.
This is the best robot ever!
