We know you're not Tom Cruise and it's not the 2050s, but you can still imagine the famous scene from Minority Report - you know, the one where he's hiding from spidery tracker robots by submerging in the bath - with the help of the simply amazing Roboquad. Roboquad is a genuine first on a good many levels. It's the first true robotic arthropod - that's the family of animals including spiders and crustaceans - with many elements in common with the Mars robots designed by its inventor, pioneering NASA scientist Mark Tilden. Put basically, Roboquad is a highly evolved animated robot with unique multi-directional motion functionality and advanced sensory awareness. It sees. It hears. And it moves accordingly. But there's much more besides. Embodying the bleeding-edge BEAM technology of its stable-mates the Robosapiens, Roboraptor and Roboreptile, it does away with the frankly clumsy CPU-based processing of old and instead models its behaviour on more complex organic lifeforms (that's you and me). All of which enables this unique Quad to perform a simply mind-boggling set of 72 pre-programmed functions controlled from a 4-layer remote. You can also thoroughly modify his personality and behaviour by altering his awareness, activity and aggression levels. Or just leave him be. And he'll explore his environment with practically no input from the outside world. Now that's what we call clever.

Fun. But not for younger children.4
Don't get me wrong, this is a lot of fun and okay for the age ranges advertised. But it is isn't fast or zippy enough to appeal to younger kids (under 10s, I think).

At the moment, the price tag of £35 (down from £70 originally!) is spot on and makes this good value. It is programmable, but few are likely to experiment much with it, due to the clunky (ie. simple) interface on the controller. Most of the fun is to be had from the demos, direct manual control as well as the 'autonomous' mode; all via the basic and fairly robust controller.

The Roboquad itself does have limitations, even beyond some which I had forseen. It doesn't function optimally on soft surfaces (eg. carpet) and naturally will have similar problems with hard but slippery surfaces. So it's a bit fussy there, 'firm' surfaces are best. However, the sensors are reasonable and operate quite well according to settings via the controller. Similar levels of sensitivity/activity can be allocated to 'agression' and 'activity', to allow at least a little variety to it's operation when 'autonomous'.

Killer feature? When my wife tried to "shoo" it away with her foot, it screamed and shook its head vigorously. Now, I know it was responding 'visually' to something being too close, but as far as kids were concerned it was a smelly feet joke. Worth it alone for the laughs had at the time!

Roboquad's a good toy that can take a beating5
I brought my brother a Roboquad for Christmas, I must say its a good size, and very durable as by brother cat and dog have all had a go at it, dog even tried attacking it, and its still running strong.

I brought 2 WowWee robots this years, the other one i brought had a poor battery life, but the Roboquad has been going for over a week, and its still on its first set of batteries, so it has excellent battery life.

Although this is a kidz toy, my sisters friends, (Aged 13-17) have all enjoyed messing with the remote this comes with.

There are very few bad points about this, although its pretty slow at moving, and although it can avoid walls, Table legs and the Christmas tree it had problems with avoiding, the remote is also a little confusing, so my brother could not learn the controls by himself, so i had to read the remote instructions, then advise my brother, But still i would not have any problem recommending this, im into my gadgets, so i still gave this 5 stars, and so would my brother.

Faulty toy1
The toy was a birthday present for my son. Unfortunately, it had a fault - the front left leg rotates dragging the rest behind it. Looking at the Internet I notice other people have had identical problems. Very disappointing.
