Product Description

First Foods answers all your questions about weaning your baby and how to provide a good variety of the right foods. Written by a qualified nutritionist and mother of two, it includes a wide range of simple recipes as well as time-saving tips and ways to prevent fussy eating. This handy guide is a fully revised and updated edition of First Foods (1998) and covers everything a new parent needs to know: / The importance of diet and what is nutritious and most likeable for your baby -- what is good for adults is not necessarily good for babies / While this book is not about weaning, it actively encourages mothers to continue giving breast or formula milk to their babies together with solids / How to know when your baby is ready to move to solids / Vegetarian babies and those with special dietary needs / Tips on food safety and basic hygiene / Tips from other parents / At a glance weaning calendar and basic recipes.

Customer Reviews

Concise and comprehensive5
Complete with recipes, nutritional information, and an overview of each of the stages of weaning, this book tells you just about everything you need to know about introducing your baby to solids. It emphasises that learning to eat solid foods should be a positive experience and helps you start your child on the way to a lifetime of healthy eating.

Incidentally, the Amazon review says this book isn't about weaning -- I think this must be a typographic error, because that's exactly what the book is about.

Preachy and Impractical1
This book is out of touch with reality. Recipes were time consuming and expensive. No practical information, for example, on freezing batches of food - how many people have time to make these extravangant recipes fresh each day?! Preaches about breastfeeding - sometimes it is not practical to breastfeed exclusively and who needs another book making mother's feel guilty if they don't feed their babies!

Weaning at a glance4
I came across this book during a browse in my local bookshop. I am not an NCT member but I am a new mum and I think this book is actually a very neat collection of information. For people with very little time to read an extensive weaning book (all new mums I am sure!) it seems to make weaning very approachable. The at-a-glance calendar of what baby can and can't have at different stages of development swung me to make the purchase. The recipes look delicious. I do also have Annabel Karmel books which also look good, but as a vegetarian I needed a book that doesn't ram meat-eating down my throat! Overall I hope it will prove very helpful.
