Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
With Let It Rain, Tracy Chapman has found a perfect platform for her potent voice. She and coproducer John Parish have opted for a muted approach where guitars and tambourines stir among simple, unadorned rhythms. The singer's once-strummed-acoustic-guitar is replaced by a more constant tidal flow, with handclaps, gospel-tinged choruses, and an open-barrelled bass drum marking time. Chapman even goes trip-hopping on "In the Dark"--a strangely shadowy highpoint featuring her artfully quavering vocal melody. The jumpy interludes on "Hard Wired" and the chamber interlude of "Over in Love" (that is reminiscent of the gorgeous interstitial tunes on Hem's debut) add colour. This is an awesomely crafted folk-soul creation for seasoned fans and for those who love Beth Orton and Norah J ones. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews

The same but different4
Having been a fan since her first album she has left behind some of the rebellious lyrics of previous songs and gone for more traditional themes. The rhythms used and the different effects she achieves with her voice are enthralling and stand her apart from the majority of female singers of her generation.

There are some tracks here which will be with you forever and for that reason alone it is worth buying if you have enjoyed her previous work.

Tracy at her best4
I became a fan of Tracy Chapman's when I was a young teenager and she has stuck with me into my twenty something years. I fell in love with "Fast Car" and the things that made that song a classic are things that are present in Tracy's new album. There are those tracks that throw themselves at you like You're the One and Hallelujah then there are those beautifully lyrical ballads such as I Am Yours and Over In Love. All in all this album, much like her others, shine through the bland world of mediocre song writing and bland melodies to cement Tracy as one of the true musicians of our generation.

Soulfull5
This album has some very touching and beautifully worded songs, if not dark and moody! Her voice fits the songs perfectly and some of the songs do stay with you for a long time. "In the dark" is a very haunting song I find but again suits the mood of this album. The music is also very dark, and you can imagine the state of tracys mind when she wrote these songs.
To me this is what tracy is good at, writing beautiful, dark and brooding songs, about love, life pain and hurt, with an honesty in her voice which you cant find these days
