Product Description

This core text for primary trainee teachers is a clear introduction to the different kinds of assessment and their purposes. Throughout the book, tasks encourage the reader to practise assessment skills and to reflect on planning, listening, questioning, observing, diagnosing and target-setting. This second edition is referenced throughout to the 2007 QTS Standards and has been fully updated to reflect the Primary National Strategy and key initiatives such as Every Child Matters. There is increased emphasis on peer assessment and target-setting linked to personalised learning. In addition, new material on Early Years observation and foundation/core subjects has been added.

Editorial Reviews

Review
I like the really practical approach, grounded in the classroom. Practical examples to use with students are always hard to find - these will be particularly helpful. The practical tasks alongside the research summaries and commentary bring together theory, practice and reflection to support the students' developing understanding. This looks very useful indeed. --Senior Lecturer, University of Winchester

Book makes it very plain to students the requirements for QTS. The terminology section is very clear. Reflective tasks are very useful. Assessment considers range of tests/tasks that are feasible. The numerous complexities of assessment strategies are explored. --Curriculum Manager, Colchester Institute

Useful overview of the key principles behind assessment for learning. The practical activities and strategies to try are particularly useful and can be weaved into the module to allow students to try out strategies before going on their school placement. --Lecturer, University of Winchester
