Customer Reviews
An Antidote to Popular Thinking or Heresy? - Let the Reader Decide!
When I first read this book, I did so from the stand-point of someone who had been trained as a coach and who usually talks of "business coaching" in terms of a dedicated process or relationship between an individual and a skilled hand at coaching (the coach). From my initial reading, I thought that Taylor's interpretation of coaching was heretical, but I came to enjoy his approach, even if not always agreeing with his viewpoints.
"Coaching" is used to mean different things to different people, and this is especially so when speaking of a skill-set managers can bring into their everyday repertoire, rather than as a one-to-one "sit down" with a dedicated coach. It is in this context that I think a key point which Taylor expresses makes particular sense - what matters in developing and supporting individuals is not being a pass master at a particular management discipline, but doing what's right and appropriate at the time to help them get from A to B. Sometimes coaching is most appropriate, but at other times, something else fits the bill.
Taylor points out the absurdity of some attempts to define "coaching", "mentoring", "counselling" and the like, bringing the reader back to think about what really matters. Not everyone will agree with his thinking, but anyone with an open mind should be prepared to have their own thoughts challenged.
To date Taylor may have had less success in getting leaders to take a fresh look at coaching than he had with leadership in "The Naked Leader", but his direct, practical and challenging style should be welcomed. It may be no bad thing for a few in the coaching world to be given the occasional shake with a little controversy.
Inspirational
A truly inspirational read. Life changing. This book has for the first time made me realise that I can just be myself and succeed. There is no 'right way' to do things there is just knowing what you want, where you are now and how to get from one to the other and then simply do it.
