Small and Perfectly formed
I bought this for £499 from the Apple Store. Why would anyone pay the price (£598 at the time of writing) Amazon is asking here for it? This is a fantastic little box that now has pride of place under my television.
After running benchmarking software on it, I discovered that it rates significantly higher than the PowerMac G5 that I use for my day to day work... And here I am using it as a media player. Front Row is excellent and I no longer have to re-encode everything I download into DivX to play back through my DVD recorder. That's the thing I was looking for.
The other thing I've noticed is that this little box is much quieter in operation than my Sony DVD recorder with built in hard drive. Even in a silent room, you have difficulty hearing any noise from it.
If you view a lot of media files this wee box is ideal, pity that Amazon are charging over the odds for it...
The best way to start with Mac computers
Small, easy to use OS, lots of connectivity, excellent media software, a DVI output for connecting to a HD-ready TV....probably the best solution on the market as an all-round home entertainment hub that doubles-up as a first-rate computer. I replaced a G4 Mac Mini with this, and found that it is at least 5x faster. Very pleased with it.
If you are moving from windows then you can use your old hardware.
I have also just bought this from the apple store because I am a student and you can get a discount from the store if you have a NUS card. If you don't then if you contact them and they will give you other options to prove that you are a student.
I was using a 3 year old PC and needed to upgrade it. My natural choice would have been to get another PC because some of the software I use isn't compatible with OSX (the Mac operating system). However on MacOS X Leopard you can install Windows with Boot camp and have dual operating system. On start-up it gives you the option of Windows or Leopard.
I use this Mac with my PC's old TFT monitor (LG Flatron) and my old keyboard and mouse, they are both USB. The downside to this is that two of the four USB 2.0 are taken up but I intend to but a USB hub.
