An excellent player, marred by a problematic remote3
While I'd agree with all the other reviewers - this is an excellent introduction to blu-ray, surely I can't be the only person having problems with the remote control? The dead giveaway that its a fault known by Samsung, is that its listed as the first item in the troubleshooting section - "No operations can be performed with the remote control". Basically, from time to time the machine just doesn't respond to the remote control. It appears to be an issue with the remote itself (and its not battery-related). The instructions in the manual work, but I've now had to reset my remote 4 times in less than a week of ownership. This involved pulling the batteries out of the remote and then holding any button down for several minutes to reset the microprocessor. If you're planning to watch a movie, you have to factor in the remote reset before you start (since the player itself doesn't have sufficient buttons to select from on-screen menus to start a movie playing - I had 10 minutes of Spiderman 1's intro sequence the other day swapping batteries in and out before I could get the remote to work to start the movie). The remote does transmit something, its just not something the player responds to until the remote gets reset.
Samsung, if you're listening - any chance you could spend more than 5 minutes designing a remote that works all of the time?

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS5
SAMSUNG BD 1400 BLU RAY PLAYER - FIRST IMPRESSIONS
    - I received the player yesterday and immediately downloaded the latest firmware upgrade via the Ethernet port conveniently situated at the rear of the player.
    - Next I attached a Wireworld Starlight HDMI cable to the 1400 and my Samsung 26" HD ready TV.
    - My first Blu Ray disc - Gangs of New York. The attaching of the HDMI cable meant the player had already hooked on to the players display and the 1400 chose 1080i and 16:9 widescreen automatically. I left it at that although I was always told by the `experts' that progressive scan is better than interlaced.
    - Anyway without any further adjustments and after about a minute the film started.
    - I had up to this point had the following dvd players:
    Yamaha 2700
XBOX 360 + HD DVD drive
    Sony 930 DVD player.
So I had plenty of options to compare performances.

    VIDEO QUALITY

In a word was excellent, this was my first experience of Blu Ray and although I had not seen a review of Gangs Of New York on blu ray review sites I did'nt believe it was a top (5 star) blu ray dvd.
The colours were rich and extremely vibrant, the contrast excellent, noise was virtually non existent, and the film was fast and exciting. The blacks were really black and the blue bands round the hats of Bill the Butcher's gang at the fight in 1846 were royal, rich and bright. In fact the detail level was superb right from the very first scene where I noticed the skin lines on Liam Neeson's palm of his hand.
I found myself wanting to watch the whole thing although I forced myself away after 2 hours of the film wanting to see what other blu ray and standard dvds looked like on the player.
    - Next up Almost Famous blu ray, the Cameron Crowe film of his late teenage years fictionalised as the story of a young rock journalist on tour with a famous rock band. Although again I had not seen any review of the disc on any blu ray review site I thought it would be good to see a supposed `inferior' disc played on the 1400.

I was pleasantly surprised and again the colours were rich and vibrant and all looked good.
I had up to this point experimented with high definition dvd particularly on the XBOX 360. Although it is a high standard I found the standard dvd performance on my Yamaha 2700 to be just as good. In particular the remastered final cut of Blade Runner was virtually the same on both. Likewise A Scanner Darkly was the same whether HD or SD.
    - The Samsung 1400 however I felt took the performance of HD by way of blu ray to a new level and now decided to have a look at standard definition on the Samsung versus the Yamaha.
    - Fists of Fury Stand. Def.- is arguably Bruce Lee's best film. Although cheaply made (compared to Enter The Dragon) in Hong Kong in the early 70s it is one of my favourites and expected the worst from the 1400. I was again surprised that the 1400 seemed as good as the Yamaha's 2700. In fact the film was fast and exciting, the colours again bright and vibrant.
    - I quickly changed over to the Yamaha 2700 to see if the 1400 was missing something. There seemed to be nothing between them although the 1400 seemed a little faster and more exciting whilst the Yamaha 2700 was a little more restrained and not as flashy bright coloured.
    - I changed over to Electroma Stan. Def.- Daft Punk's new film. Previously I had found this film to be dry and meant as a chill out down beat experience. Again the 1400 produced good colours out of the film the car in particular looking shiny black and the western background looking impressive. The players upbeat approach again contrasting with the 2700's slower more classical rendition of the film.

    AUDIO QUALITY
Through the HDMI cable to the TV and then to a Roksan Candy amplifier and Quad Q11 stereo speakers the 1400 was excellent with both the Blu Ray and SD dvds.
The stereo 2 channel output through audio cables at the back of the player to the amplifier however was not quite as detailed and loud and found myself preferring the HDMI outlet.

    Bad Points
    - The zoom button on the remote did not seem to work.

Overall then on first impressions I was impressed by the 1400 especially the picture and at the price (around £200) from Amazon.

Mine arrived today & I could not wait to finish work & get home to watch glorious HD films, Once plugged in it started quickly & I watched planet earth, I was speechless!, From there on I watched several DVD's that were upscaled to wonderful 1080P & was quite happy with the result, however the drive started to make a funny noise & now King Kong is locked in the machine & on its way back to Amazon. I hope that this was a one-off as it has not realy put me off what is truly a great machine at a great price.
