CD Description
Dave Matthews Band’s Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King is the group’s seventh studio album and i first since 2005’s Stand Up. With its celebratory spirit and lyrical ruminations on fragile mortality, Big Whiskey pays tribute to the band’s saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, and features some of his last recordings. Moore passed away in the summer of 2008, halfway through the making of the album. It has been called the group's (also named the top-drawing American band in the world by Billboard) heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally.
Customer Reviews
A stunning, thought provoking and perfectly balanced return to form.
A must for any Dave Matthews cohort and a new direction which will almost certainly broaden the appeal of this iconic band.
This album combines depth and structure of Before These Crowded Streets and the upbeat joy of Under The Table and Dreaming.
It's definitely DMB but it's a heavier, more diverse and modern version.
The effort that has gone into this album is obvious from the outset, Big Whiskey is a fitting tribute to the late Leroi Moore and the first DMB release that has done the band justice for over a decade.
DMB back on track...
Dave Matthews Band's 'Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King' represents a long-awaited return to form for the genre-transcending American 5-piece. While the standard of DMB's stunning live shows, which are just about the best in the business, have never been in doubt, the recorded material has been on a steady downward curve since their 3rd album, 1998's 'Before These Crowded Streets'. 'Big Whiskey..' is certainly their best studio album since the untouchable peak of that record and continues to employ the complexity of rhythm and syncopation that made BTCS such a hit with DMB fans, and is undoubtedly their heaviest album to date. But Dave's melodies still shine through, as does the Violin of Boyd Tinsley and the bubbling Sax backing of the irreplacable Leroi Moore. Meanwhile, the peerless drumming of Carter Beauford is allowed room to express itself far more than on more formulaic predecessors 'Stand Up' and 'Everyday'. From the outset, when Moore's haunting sax intros the riff-laden funk of Shake Me Like A Monkey, the soaring Funny The Way It Is and the stunning Lying In The Hands Of God, the record is strong and consistent, only fading slightly in later fillers like the non-descript Alligator Pie and Time Bomb, which descends into a raucous blur after a promisingly understated start. However, all reservations are forgotten by the time strains through the wonderful You And Me to finish. (Though this UK release also includes 2 more worthy bonus tracks...). All in all, 'Big Whiskey..' is a very welcome suprise for those of us who thought DMB had peaked a decade ago, and while it may not be as accessible a starting point as 'Crash' for anyone who has just discovered DMB, the album is sure to win Dave and Co a whole new following of obsessed fans like me!!!
