highly informative
I read this book inside-out during my twin pregnancy and found it both reassuring and informative. But as with most books on pregnancy, it tends to be very good in some areas and weaker in others. I think it is probably a good book if you are looking for detailed facts and figures, statistics and precise information which maybe your doctor and/or midwife might not furnish you with. But it does not go into a vast amount of detail where the touchy-feely side of pregnancy is concerned...ie. how your emotions change during the course of a taxing twin pregnancy, which does - inevitably - take its toll on both nerves and body.
An excellent read and a must for the statistician. Also quite helpful when I was diagnosed as being anaemic towards the end, and found some information in this book which helped me persuade my doctor not to put me through a long series of tests, since the blood test he had taken might have been inaccurate (according to this book, the massive increase in your blood volume during a twin pregnancy could make tests for anaemia inaccurate). Indeed, I was fine and the babies were fine. It also recommended eating more with twins - which I did and put on nearly five stone! - but my twins were super weights in the end compared to my two previous underweight singletons. So it really helped.
Certainly worth buying if you're expecting two gorgeous little stars. Oh, and mine were boys, both beautiful and perfectly healthy!
It's American but it's still very good and useful
Written by a mother of twins and obstetrician, this is a medically detailed yet readable book on what to expect at every stage of twin pregnancy.
Yes the case studies (and there are lots of them) are all American women, but they are not that different to British women and I found the differences in our healthcare systems easy to get around.
For the section (with little illustrations) on possible twin presentation combinations and what the author would personally do for delivery in each case, this book was worth buying alone. It gives you that little bit of medical knowledge that puts you in a slightly better position when it comes to discussing your own care with doctors.
I was very glad I bought it and have referred to it oftend. This and 'Double Trouble' together were the perfect combination.
Helpful but rather American
I found I was expecting twins when I was only 5 weeks pregnant so had lots of time to prepare, so the first thing I did was acquire what looked like a helpful book. I'm glad I did because it explained a lot of twin stuff that my doctor/midwife didn't seem to know about. (However, take the advice about eating twice as much as singleton pregnant mums with caution - I did, and I still look 6 months pregnant now when my little darlings are 3 months old!)
There are good chapters on the various conditions that are more likely to happen to twin mums, such as diabetes and preeclampsia, but this is not handled negatively, so is really reassuring - you always feel the likeliest outcome is 2 lovely babies.
The only drawback is the US slant, in that they clearly do things differently over there. For instance, there are constant references to your monthly scan and check-up with your obstetrician (I wish!)
