The Quayside, Past & Present - A Quality Read5
A wonderful book which is full of really interesting facts & snippets of history about the Newcastle Quayside. It isn't the thickest book ever (running to 96 pages) but is crammed with fascinating Tyneside history. There are some fantastic photographs & illustrations both past & present of both the Newcastle & Gateshead sides of the river (although the emphasis is very much on the Newcastle side).
Interspersed with small boxes of information headed "Quay Facts" ,the narrative is well written & concise. It covers landmarks like the Tyne Bridge, The Sage Gateshead & the Ouseburn & relates stories like that of Bessie Surtees & the great Quayside fire. It's written as a tour guide, it would certainly be a useful companion for a walk round the Quay, but it is a good read regardless.
A fantastic slice of local history, from the excellent Tyne Bridge Publishing - they really do know how to put quality local history books together & this is yet another example.
I loved it but then I'm biased, because I love Newcastle.
