Editorial Reviews

CD Description
In a career that spanned more than half of the 20th century, there wasn't much that folk legend Ewan MacColl didn't do.Here was a man who would take the stage with nothing but a microphone and a twinkle in his eye and leave a room full ofstamping feet. With that in mind, this is an excellent selection of his work over the years, a mixture of the traditional and original, with reminders of his contributions towardsagit-prop theatre and radio ballads as well as his more conventional folk material.
MacColl's voice leaps into action with "The Manchester Rambler", one of his most memorable protest songs, and shivers with reproach at the incest ballad"Sheath & Knife". MacColl's heavily covered "Dirty Old Town" is here in its author's version, as is the remarkable "Looking For A Job", which he recorded at the age of 71 but still fuelled with the spirit of an angry young man. The final number, "The Joy of Living", was written the year before he died, his voice already frail; it is a last great song from aleviathan among folk singers.
