In 1980, Irish rock legends U2 released Boy, a precursor to the band's later successes with its combination of large stadium sounds and post-punk sensibilities--an anthemic, youthful and sometimes exhilarating record.

Boys 2 Men!
Fantastic debut album from U2 that shows amazing maturity for a bunch of guys barely out of school.Although the band's signature sound would come a few years later, this album shows the potential that U2 would go on to fulfil.Steve Lilywhite does a fantastic job with the production and I think this is one of the appealing things about this album, it has a very basic yet enchanting feel to it unlike a lot of the music that was coming out at the time. There's many songs on here that made up U2's live set for the next few years, but apart from the obvious classics like "I Will Follow" and "Out Of Control" there are a few lost gems on here such as "Twilight",the brooding "An Cat Dubh" and "The Ocean" which although is just over a minute long has a wonderful atmosphere and again showcases the band's imagination to full effect.I'm glad to see that a lot of the material on this album has been put back into the "Under A Blood Red Sky" dvd having not made the original cut.A true testament to some great songs,a soundtrack to childhood innocence and a reminder of how creative young people used to be before the i-pod generation!
A colourless boring album
I'm not convinced that U2 are a real albums band. I think they excel on a few individual monster tracks per album, but that the rest of their albums can be pretty stodgy, dull stuff. When they're good, their amazing. When they're bad, they're awful. I also much prefer the post Achtung Baby period to their earlier 80's work.
I bought this with very, very low expectations. And it was even worse than I expected. A stunningly boring, stodgy 42 minute album. It has one good song that you can get on a Best Of, while the rest is just terrible. Bono was a poor lyric writer at this point and the band struggle to play anything memorable.
I have no intention of listening to this album again anytime in the near or distant future. There is just nothing enjoyable about it except the opening track. The album isn't even going to make it onto my iPod.
1. "I Will Follow" 3:36 (5 out of 5 stars)
A classic signature U2 song. I have nothing negative to say about it.
2. "Twilight" 4:22 (2 stars)
Drab rather boring song. Bono's contribution, lyrically and vocally, is pretty poor. Really not much of a song.
3. "An Cat Dubh" 4:47 (1 star)
A load of banal noise. Barely any trace elements of a song, tune or a point.
4. "Into the Heart" 3:28 (2 stars)
This song follows on from the previous track without any break and can be considered to be the same song. Indifferent track.
5. "Out of Control" 4:13 (2 stars)
It rocks but it's still dull.
6. "Stories for Boys" 3:02 (2 stars)
It rocks but it's still dull.
7. "The Ocean" 1:34 (1 star)
Meaningless short interlude of zero value. Awful.
8. "A Day Without Me" 3:14 (2 stars)
Has a bit of a tune to it and the lyrics are almost decent. Still not much cop though.
9. "Another Time, Another Place" 4:34 (2 stars)
Almost semi-interesting at the end when Bono does something different with his vocals.
10. "The Electric Co." 4:48 (2 stars)
One of the better tracks but that's very faint praise. Lyrically rubbish but the music is almost okay. It's still a bad song but at least it has some life in it.
11. "Shadows and Tall Trees" 4:36 (1 star)
Traces of a tune but so incredibly boring.
12. "Saturday Night" 30 second bonus track (1 star)
Short guitar noise instrumental. Beyond pointless.
Fantastic
Revisited this album after many years. You forget how raw and talented they were, superb.
