fascinating, informative, beautifully illustrated
Combined with details of Bauer's background and training, details of how he brought many first-time illustrations of new plants and animals from several parts of the world is entirely absorbing. His circumnavigation of Australia in the "Investigator" with Flinders, his masterly drawing and colouring skills and prodigious output are justly still recorded in the Natural History Museum, Oxford University archives, and many European libraries. This publication echoes Goethe's quotation in the book "We are enchanted at the sight of these leaves; nature is revealed, art concealed, great in its precision, gentle in its execution, decisive and satisfying in its appearance".
