Product Description

Strada, the all-in-one GPS system from Panasonic, has a 7" touch panel LCD monitor that features large buttons and a simple, easy-to-navigate interface that streamlines operational steps. A customizable destination menu lets you select your three most used destination menu buttons to increase the speed of use. Massive hard disk capacity means you can see your entire route without swapping discs, even if youre crossing the US/Canadian border. This system uses NAVTEQ maps, which include updated Points of Interest (POI) and a rich collection of searchable addresses. Your vehicle's position on the map is displayed with high accuracy, thanks to the Panasonic hybrid navigation system. This computes location based on a combination of GPS and self-contained "autonomous" navigation. The autonomous system uses a gyro-sensor and a speed sensor to maintain vehicle positioning even if GPS signal reception is temporarily compromised.

Panasonic CN-GP50N Portable Satellite Navigation System

Available from November 2007

Panasonic announced the launch in the European market of the Strada CN-GP50N Portable Navigation System. This marks the first European product launch for Panasonic's Strada navigation systems, which have been well received in Japan and North America. The CN-GP50N goes far beyond GPS navigation, offering a comprehensive approach to in-car entertainment that encompasses the pinnacle of Panasonic's mobile audio-video technologies exemplified by Strada Picture (high picture quality technology), Strada Sound (high sound quality design) and Strada Link (multi-media networking)

BRAVIA D3500 Series LCD TV

Easy-to-use GUI

This simple and intuitively understandable graphical user interface (GUI) is an original Panasonic design. Icon colours and textures are crafted to contrast with their backgrounds and enhance recognition and differentiation

Compact & Slim Design

With its compact dimensions of 128 (W) x 84 (H) x 30 (D) mm, this slim package is designed for comfortable portability. After parking the vehicle, the user can easily remove and carry the CN-GP50N, rather than leaving it where it could pose a temptation to would-be thieves. The unit can also be used outside the vehicle or at home, thanks to its built-in battery, which offers about four hours of operation and charging adaptor. Note: CN-GP50N has full built-in GPS antenna and fixing bracket included, however a full list of accessories is proposed such as external GPS antenna, charging adaptors, fixing bracket and TMC antenna among others

Voice Command

By using voice commands, the driver can set the destination while keeping hands on the steering wheel. The system can by trained to recognise the driver's vocal characteristics for enhanced recognition accuracy. Easy-to-Use Keyboard Three keyboard layouts can be selected: ABCD, QWERTY and AZERTY. Accented letters can also be input, allowing users to type in destinations in the manner to which they are accustomed

24P True Cinema

Vast Coverage Across Europe

New map data covers 37 European countries in total, which includes a wealth of information, including 1.7 million points of interest (POI), postal codes and much more. Famous landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate and Arc de Triomphe are shown as three-dimensional icons on the map. The database holds icons for 220 landmarks in Austria, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK

Multi-Lingual Voice Guidance

The user can choose from among 19 languages for voice guidance. When travelling across borders, the ability to receive guidance on routes and turns in one's native language helps support safe driving and avoids the distraction of having to refer to maps. Menu indications can be displayed in the user's choice of 16 languages

POI Direct Dial

After finding a point of interest using the POI search function, the driver can directly dial the telephone number listed in the database for that facility. This is convenient for making reservations at restaurants for example

Phone Book Transfer

Phonebook data can be transferred wirelessly from the mobile phone* to the CN-GP50N. * The phone must support the OPP standard

Satnav

Lane Assistant / Speed Information

As the driver approaches a junction where a turn is required, the display shows the correct lane in orange on the map and alerts the driver with voice guidance. When driving a route for the first time, this helps the driver prepare ahead of time, thereby avoiding last-minute lane changes. By comparing the vehicle's speed, as determined by GPS, with speed limit data for the road being travelled, the system is able to determine when the speed limit is exceeded and alert the driver with an icon display and audible warning. Note: This function can be adjusted or disabled

JPG/BMP Viewer

Still photos stored in jpg or bmp file format on an SD Memory Card can be displayed on the CN-GP50N screen. This enables large 5 inch (12.5cm) diagonal display of photos taken with a digital camera, for example. A variety of playback modes can be selected to provide a sequential slide show or random display with a choice of five settings for the image switching time

handsfree

Bluetooth Hands-Free Calling

The CN-GP50N provides hands-free operation with Bluetooth-capable mobile phones. This function offers convenience and safety, by allowing the driver to carry on a telephone conversation while leaving the mobile phone in a bag or pocket. Dialling can be performed directly by touching the large numeric keypad displayed on the screen, or numbers can be chosen from the incoming and outgoing call history display.* The Bluetooth word mark and logo are owned by the Bluetooth SIG, Inc and any use of such marks by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is under license

Panasonic Strada SatNav4
I thought long and hard about getting a SatNav. Should I?/Shouldn't I? I mean, do I REALLY need one? What's wrong with a map book? Well nothing. I'll still hang on to the old atlas for a bit longer, just in case. But it seems like you HAVE to have a SatNav these days. They're really dropping in price now, and this one was a penny short of 200quid.

So, what's it like? Well, it looks lovely. Nice big screen, which is good. It means you can actually see whats happening. And its also got the Bluetooth function so, when connected, your phone contacts appear on screen too. I've found no problem with the phone section, yet. I'm using it in my van and the sound is OK. Yet to take or make a call on a motorway though.

Now then, can it find its way OK? Well yes, it can. There seems to be the odd quirk here & there, but then I think they all do that. New roads will not necessarily be on the system for example, so don't expect a miracle. You still have to use your brain. If you do go off track and the system gets confused, it seems to re-route ok, so no real problem.

I once borrowed a Navman SatNav for a visit to Ireland, but it lost its maps as soon as I drove out of the Rosslare dock. This one though, seems to be on the ball. Panasonic is using Navteq mapping (as do Garmin). The Navman and TomTom use TeleAtlas maps. Maybe thats the difference? I don't know. Anyway, this one works over there.

Some comments have been made about the reflective screen. True, it is a bit. But its not impossible to read as some might suggest. I'm not TOO fussed about the lack of a mains charger, but a protective case would've been nice.

OK, lets re-cap... It looks good, works well, and has bluetooth so you can go hands-free on the phone. Oh, and you can swap SD cards to view photos on it if you wish.
No down sides just yet, apart from the lack of a case.
