Starlight - Geoffrey Lewis
Very short book this. 159 pages. A simple story simply told. But compulsive reading - as it says on the back cover - and it is.
I understand from the blurb on another book of his, " A boy off the bank", that "Starlight" is to be made into a film. The plot lends itself to British Cinema so obvioulsy that I did wonder if it was written with that aim in mind but any trace of cynicism lingering at the back of my mind never argued with the fact that it was a good story and just was I was looking for at the time.
The term "poignant" could have been coined for this book. It brought tears to my eyes a couple of times, especially at the end. 11 year old Harry Turner's middle class family move from the town to a country cottage. In the first few days at his new school, Harry makes friends with Jake, the class outcast - a "dirty boatee" whose father works on the local canal - or "cut".
The book explores the many cultural differences between the boys and their lifestyles that their friendship transcends and leads to an emotional climax.
This is a revitalising injection of humanity which demands such a brief investment of your time, that every second is worth its weight in gold.
Enjoy
Johh
