Product Description

Peter Vardy's much acclaimed introduction to the study of ideas about God -- now revised and updated. A clear, well-written guide to philosophical thinking about God. Starting with the question of what it means to say we believe in God, and looking at the nature of truth, Peter Vardy goes on to examine ideas about God and their influence on Christian thinking. Peter Vardy takes the reader through the arguments, using amusing illustrations and analogies. He writes for the lay person or student, not assuming any specialist knowledge, and not imposing any particular view. 'This is about the best elementary textbook in the philosophy of God I have come across! an extremely useful book.' Hugh Meynell, The Tablet 'This is a masterpiece of coherence. Step by step the reader is led clearly and humorously through the philosophical maze which confuses our thinking about God.' Linda Smith, Head of Religious Education, King's College, London

Customer Reviews

A fascinating introduction to the philosophy of religion.5
This book tackles the issues in regards to God. What is GOd? What does it mean to believe in God? Why do need to believe in God?. It is an excellent book that discusses a variety of theories leading to the existence of God and vice versa. From the cosmological argument to Anselm's Design argument. The book tackles the issues in clear and concise vocabulary and it excellent as an intorduction to Philosophy of Religion.

Peter Vardy is an excellent writer and discusses the issues from a non biased perspective. You should definately buy this book if you are puzzled in regards to your faith and you want to explore arguments in regards to this.

Great intro to all newcomers to the topic4
Vardy's book is a must for all A-level and undergraduate students as well as non-academics who want to increase their knowledge about a central issue in philosophy of religion - the nature of the Christian God and how he relates to human existence. It includes all of the main arguments for the existence of God (except moral) as well as insights into the history of God and the his attributed qualities. It is well worth a read. It may be disappointing for the highly academic reader but to the layman and student it is a 'God'send!

Peter Vardy is Brilliant4
This book is an accessable yet intellegent introduction to the philosophy of God. Like many it was one of my A-level texts and I was also lucky enough to go to an inspirational conference by the man himself. He is passionate about his subject and this is what makes his books so good. If you are interested- Buy It.
