Customer Reviews
An eminently practical guide to everyday spiritual practices
For years I've been looking for a book that would be authentically Christian but didn't just tell me that in order to be 'spiritual' I needed to seclude myself with Bible and prayer book. This one fills the bill admirably. Without in any way diminishing the value or importance of traditional disciplines, it opens up new possibilities of literally living the whole of life in the consciousness of God's presence with rituals covering everything from big moments like birth, death, marriage, divorce to what might seem more regular events like shopping, washing, dressing, computing, driving ... etc. Can't recommend it too highly. It's certainly transformed my faith practices.
An Inspiring Book
As Michael Mitton takes us through the characters and events of Advent he presents his 'Handful of Light' with great compassion and sensitivity. He seems able to combine encouragement and challenge with genuine realism and empathy. His exploration of hope inspires but is also pragmatic. He recognises that for many of us our faith has as many questions as answers, doubts as certainties. He recognises that many live with experiences and situations in their lives, and the lives of those around them, which challenge their faith rather than confirm it. His 'Handful of Light', is therefore grounded in the real experience of peoples lives and faith and, because of this, offers genuine encouragement. Many of the characters he explores are so human, falliable and unsure, so like us in fact, that it offers us Hope we can both access and be inspired and reassured by. A wonderful book!
