Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
"It is a special pleasure to introduce R T (Dick) France's commentary to the pastoral and scholarly community, who should find it a truly exceptional - and helpful - volume." So says Gordon Fee in his preface to this work. France's masterful commentary on Matthew focuses on exegesis of Matthew's text as it stands rather than on the prehistory of the material or details of Synoptic comparison. It is concerned throughout with what Matthew himself meant to convey about Jesus and how he set about doing so within the cultural and historical context of first-century Palestine. Amid the wide array of Matthew commentaries available today, France's world-class stature, his clear focus on Matthew and Jesus, his careful methodology, and his user-friendly style promise to make this volume an enduring standard for years to come.

Customer Reviews

A masterpiece of story and explanation combined5
This commentary reaches out to all who would know more of Jesus through the Gospel of Matthew. It is accessible to scholar and 'interested person' alike. It makes the meaning of the text plain by translating it into words that can be understood in 21st century whilst at all times remaining true to the message Matthew wished to put over to the 1st Century Jewish world concerning this Jesus of Nazareth.

Excellent evangelical commentary on Matthew's Gospel.5
This is quite a size and takes some reading but I thoroughly enjoyed journeying with Jesus over the months. The author brought His ministry alive to me as well as teaching me numerous things about the people and times.

Can be a bit frustrating as he does refer back to one of his previous books at length but doesn't quote the passages expecting one to be aware of this work.

Having said that, I would recommend this book if you have a love of learning about the scriptures in more depth.
