A well though out continuation
This picks up from the After the Fall storyline and finds Angel in a changed world from where he was left. The old team is no more and many characters are not included in this arc, so far.
Aftermath follows a changed role for Angel with some familiar faces backing him up, as well as new characters. The story fuses the shades of grey challenges that made Angel at his best when he fights anyone who challenges his view of morality.
As good as the storyline is, the artwork left me disappointed. Sometimes a lot of good will is needed to recognise sometimes who a person is. Angel in particular often bears no resemblence to David Boreanaz and thus the likeness that we have come to know. He also appears to have developed extra muscles from somewhere...
Overall, the storyline means that the book is well worth picking up. You can enjoy it many times as the quality of the binding is excellent. Don't let the drawbacks put you off.
A great standalone story and superb epilogue to After The Fall
If you've read After The Fall 4 and thought like I did that the arc from the TV series is all wrapped up nicely, you may be wondering if it's worth buying more of Angel and committing yourself to another story arc. Don't worry, this volume is self-contained and wraps itself up at the end. Even better, the writers wisely leave most of the major Angel characters out of this volume so as to set it apart as being something different. Though it calls itself Volume 5, Aftermath is not After The Fall part 5 - it just takes the legacy of that plot and weaves from it something new.
The only main characters in this volume are Angel, Connor and Kate (plus one other who appears later), and a couple of new characters are introduced, including a shape shifting leopard woman who doesn't wear clothes a lot (but does it in strategically placed shadows).
The artwork is different from previous volumes, but is crisp and unhurried, with every character clearly recognisable. There is only one gripe I have, which is that for a couple of pages when Angel has his shirt off he looks uncannily like the Incredible Hulk. It's more funny than annoying.
The story is very well scripted and it's great to see Kate back again (though I do wonder what happened to Nina?) There's some great classic Connor dialogue too, which I missed in After The Fall. The hardback binding of this series has been the best you're ever going to find. I hope they continue it with future volumes.
Not great.
Picks up where After The Fall left off and I was pretty excited to read this, however from the first page I could tell this wasn't up to snuff. First off the artwork definitely isn't top quality, in fact the characters faces are particularly bad as none of the characters resemble their on screen counterparts or incarnations in previous books and are, at times, hard to identify, also Angel himself looks like some kind of exaggerated caveman who's taken a few harsh punches to the face and has a constant expression of constipation.
Then there's the story, which reads more like unadventurous fan-fiction than anything else. There are a few redeeming moments but otherwise I would not recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed After The Fall. Very disappointing.
