6 titles on the line, it's Wrestlemania!
Wrestlemania 15 came live from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and didn't come up short when it came to good matches.
1: Triple Threat Match for the WWF Hardcore Championship
Badd Ass Billy Gunn (Champion) VS. Al Snow VS. Hardcore Holly
A good opening match. Plenty of weapons used including HEAD! 8/10
2: WWF Tag Team Championships
Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart (Champions) VS. D'Lo Brown and Test
Good match considering that D'Lo Brown and Test aren't regular tag team partners. 8/10
3: Brawl For All
Butterbean VS. Bart Gunn
Difficult to judge, as the knockout was quite quick. 7/10
4: Winner gets to be the referee for the main event
Big Show Paul Wight VS. Mankind
This match didn't last too long. Ending was good. 8/10
5: Four Corners Match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship
Road Dogg (Champion) VS. Val Venis VS. Ken Shamrock VS. Goldust
Good mid-card match. Only two people in the ring at once, instead of all four. 8/10
6: Kane VS. Triple H
Not a bad match between these two. Has a SURPRISE ENDING. 7.5/10
7: WWF Women's Championship
Sable (Champion) VS. Tori
Typical women's match. 6/10
8: WWF European Championship
Shane McMahon (Champion) VS. X-Pac
Lots of corporate interference. X-Pac is attacked before he even gets to the ring. 8/10
9: Hell In A Cell Match
The Undertaker VS. Big Boss Man
Not QUITE as brutal as the previous HIAC's. Okay, it was pretty bad. There were even some 'boring' chants. 6/10
10: No D.Q. Match for the WWF Championship
The Rock (Champion) VS. Stone Cold Steve Austin
A great Wrestlemania main event. The first of three Rock/Austin encounters to take place at Wrestlemania. 9.5/10
What a Wrestlemania, what a main event, what a night!
The fifteenth Wrestlemania tops all that went before it, in my opinion. But then again, Wrestlemania finds a way to top itself every year anyway, and the two years that followed this video are no exception.
The night opens with a great Hardcore Title match, with defending champion Bad Ass Billy Gunn defending against two former champs; Al Snow and Hardcore Holly. This match is highly entertaining and inventive (without resorting to what most hardcore matches do nowadays - going backstage). This is a superb opener for a Pay Per View.
Next up is the final of the Brawl For All competition. This is a boxing match between Bart 'The Hammer' Gunn and boxing champion Butterbean. Although in a segment shown before the match everyone predicts that Bart will win in the third, Butterbean proves he is more of a challenge than that. A bout with hard hitting punches and a scorcher of a knockout.
Before Wrestlemania started, the WWF's regular TV show 'Heat' went out from the same arena. During this show there was a Battle Royal, the last two men remaining earning a shot together for Owen Hart's and Jeff Jarrett's Tag Team belts. These two competitors were D'Lo Brown (with Ivory) and the Corporations hired gun, Test. The unfamiliarity and tension between the challengers shows throughout the match, and eventually the champions come out on top. I can't help thinking that this match would have been made a lot better if there was some history between the teams and some story line to work with. An average tag team encounter.
The next match is to decide who would referee the main event later on in the night, Mankind of The Big Show. The 'Show dominates the match, brutalising Mankind with punches and chokeslams, he even drops all 500 pounds of his huge body on to Mankind's chest. This match has an ending that has repercussions later in the evening. This isn't so much a match by itself, as it needs the events later in the evening to be important. It's always good to see Mankind, though.
An important night in the lives of the popular Degeneration-X, with Road Dogg defending his Intercontinental Championship in a Four-Corners Elimination Match against the bizarre Goldust, the lethal Ken Shamrock and the gruff-voiced Val Venis. I liked this match, it was just a pity that the first two competitors got eliminated the way they did. Road Dogg is entertaining on the mike as always. Triple H, the leader of D-X, then goes up against Kane. Triple H's old pal Chyna interferes with delightful results if you're a D-X fan. The final match involving members of Degeneration-X is European Champion Shane McMahon defending against X-Pac. The challenger has the odds stacked against him with Test in Shane's corner and The Mean Street Posse in the front row. Things seem to even up when the newly reunited Triple H and Chyna come down to ringside, but in true Wrestlemania fashion, surprises are never far away!
Fans of violent combat between two finely toned athletes don't really appreciate the women's division. This match doesn't really break the trend. The are some impressive moves from Tori and interference from a beast of a woman. Nothing to shout about really. Watching this, you realise how far the women's division has come in the last couple of years.
Although I prefer the more aerial antics involved in a TLC Match, Hell in a Cell is still one of my favourites. This time the king of the Hell in a Cell, The Undertaker, takes on The Big Boss Man. This was when the Undertaker was the 'Lord of Darkness' and led the 'Brood', a character I much prefer to his 'American Badass' moniker of the last year. The Hell in a Cell matches never fail to deliver new and shocking events and this time round the ending is unbelievable, and totally appropriate to the character of The Lord of Darkness. Amazing match.
The main event is quite possibly the best one-on-one match without ladders, tables, cages or cells. It sees the WWF 'Corporate' Champion, The Rock, defend his title against the infinitely popular Stone Cold Steve Austin. Before the match starts one of my favourite Superstars ever, Shawn Michaels comes out and delivers a brilliant promo. These guys deliver the performance of their lives and the match is known throughout the wrestling world as a classic. There is so much I can say about this, but it would be better if you saw it yourself so buy this video today! You won't be disappointed, I promise.
A good 'Mania, however a couple of sore points
Hardcore Title - Billy Gunn vs. Hardcore Holly vs. Al Snow - Fun opener, nothing too great, however it wasn't abysmal - **1/2
Big Show vs. Mankind - Terrible match, the second * is for Foley's chair bumps at the end, and the confrontation between Show/McMahon, reminiscent of Andre/Heenan at WMVI - **
Tag Titles - Owen Hart/Jeff Jarret vs. D'Lo Brown/Test - A good match, maybe could have been better if D'Lo and Test hadn't wrestled earlier in the night, the Ivory/PMS angle on the outside was a welcome distraction to make the match more interesting - **1/2
Hell in a Cell - Undertaker vs. Big Boss Man - Terrible match, the second biggest sore point of the event - DUD
Brawl For All - Butterbean vs. Bart Gunn - Yes, the biggest sore point of the event - DUD
Triple H vs. Kane - One of the matches of the night, the Chyna/HHH re-union was a pleasant surprise as well - ***1/2
Intercontinental Title Match - Goldust vs. Road Dogg vs. Ken Shamrock vs. Val Venis - Not much heat, but not a bad match - **1/2
Women's Title - Sable vs. Tori - The usual women's match - *
European Title - Shane McMahon vs. X-Pac - Match of the night, the DVD is worth buying just for this contest - ****
World Title - The Rock vs. Steve Austin - Fantastic match, full of action, the two biggest stars in the game go head to head for their first WM main event, not a foot wrong here - ****
Special Features - Not bad, the vignettes and alternative commentaries of the main event are the most notable - ***
Overall, apart from Triple H/Kane, Shane/X-Pac, Austin/Rock, this is just another event, but those three matches make this a WrestleMania, definately worth the money.
