Great while it lasted
When the World Wrestling Federation became World Wrestling Entertainment, the Attitude Era was laid to rest. A new era had begun and a new generation had arrived in 2002, one that needed a leader.
In 2002 and 2003, wrestling belonged to one man, and that was (without question) Brock Lesnar. Don't believe me? Look back at his career on his DVD. You'll be reminded very quickly that Lesnar was much more than a flash in the pan. He was a monstrous phenomenon with the amateur background, and the technical wrestling ability to go with anyone he faced.
Because Here Comes The Pain was released in 2003, the documentary only explores the start of his time with WWE up until May 2003, so sadly what's covered here is before the later stages of his rivalry with Kurt Angle, his short feud with Chris Benoit, and his No Way Out title bout with the late, great Eddie Guerrero. But there're still a lot of classic moments here that are worth your time.
Unlike the WWE's latest superstar releases, Here Comes The Pain doesn't have the main star of the show being interviewed throughout the whole thing. We only see Brock and get comments from him when his childhood is being discussed. From then on, it's just a handful of WWE agents, his opponents, greatest rivals and Paul Heyman giving their views on what he accomplished and how he performed in the ring. Although it's still great viewing, it's disappointing that we only hear from Lesnar himself for about five minutes and that's it.
Despite this criticism, the career highlights are genuinely impressive. Starting off with his assaulting of fellow wrestlers, you quickly become reminded how Brock was immediately established as a monstrous heel and an absolute killer. Then it moves onto his victory in the 2002 King of the Ring tournament, his brief feud with Rob Van Dam, his shocking (and convincing) annihilation of Hulk Hogan, and the beginning of his era with his WWE Championship victory over the Rock. All the while, Brock's intensity and athleticism coming across as absolutely amazing.
Even after Brock's first WWE Championship, he showed that he could carry the load that he was given. He went with the Undertaker in an extremely violent Hell in a Cell match, showcased his superhuman strength and power in a successful feud with the Big Show, and then had a great wrestling rivalry with Kurt Angle, leading to a quality main event at WrestleMania 19.
After another short feud with future champion John Cena and a stretcher match with the Big Show are covered, the documentary finishes off with more comments from those who worked with him. It's really sad at this point to hear so many guys saying how Brock was going to be around for a long time and really leave his mark on the business. Paul Heyman says how right he was when he declared Lesnar `The Next Big Thing' and that can't be argued against. It's just such a shame that it didn't last longer than two years. And Gregory `Hurricane' Helms makes such an ironic point when he says, "Watch Brock now and enjoy every minute of it. Because when he's gone, he's gone".
The extras consist of his SummerSlam 2002 training video, a Confidential piece documenting his experience at the event and six extra matches:
Brock Lesnar Vs Hulk Hogan
A great match that showed that Lesnar could go with wrestling's biggest name. Hulk made Brock look the man and put him over in a huge way. Shows how successful Hulk's 2002 comeback was and put Lesnar's name on the map. The outcome is truly shocking. (8/10)
WWE Championship Match
The Rock (Champion) Vs Brock Lesnar
Rocky's era ended and Brock's era began. An exciting rollercoaster ride that repeated the obvious; Lesnar was in his prime and could have classic matches with anyone. The Rock also deserves credit for going out with a bang. (9/10)
WWE Championship Hell in a Cell Match
Brock Lesnar (Champion) Vs The Undertaker
Yet another feather in Lesnar's cap. An extremely violent affair with great dramatic storytelling. No one does Hell in a Cell quite like Taker. (9/10)
WWE Championship Match
Kurt Angle (Champion) Vs Brock Lesnar
Two of the most gifted athletes in WWE history square off in the setting the match deserved: the main event at WrestleMania. You would never have believed that Angle wrestled this match with a broken neck given how he performed here. I miss both of these guys terribly. (8/10)
WWE Championship Stretcher Match
Brock Lesnar (Champion) Vs The Big Show
The best match these two had together. Their rivalry succeeded because they bought out the best in each other. The best Big Show match I've ever seen and one that made great use of the stipulation. The ending is awesome. (8/10)
WWE Championship Match
Brock Lesnar (Champion) Vs The Big Show
A rematch from the above one. Very good effort by both men that leads up to an UNBELIEVABLE finish that you have to see to believe. (7/10)
Conclusion? Brock Lesnar: Here Comes The Pain is a great DVD, despite suffering from a severe lack of Lesnar's comments and the fact that it came out some time before Lesnar's final moments in the WWE. I really would've liked to have seen his Iron Man match with Kurt Angle, as well as his battles with Chris Benoit.
The documentary also only lasts an hour, making it one of the more shorter presentations WWE has ever produced, but overall, I really can't complain. Brock Lesnar was a great wrestler that contributed more to the business in 2 years than most guys ever could. Even if he never comes back to WWE, Here Comes The Pain is a reminder of how great the Brock Lesnar era was while it lasted. Buy it and take a look back of what a shame it was when it all abruptly ended.

The Next Big Thing On One Disc
No doubt with Brocks time in the WWE he truly showed that he deserved the name The Next Big Thing because within the space of 1 year he became a household name to wrestling fans around the world.
Brock the the perfect WWE superstar who had the best wrestling ability of anyone we had ever seen, the intensity he displayed was sometimes quite scary but when you seen him tense up his shoulders and his face turn red you knew he meant business and there was no stopping him.
Brocks most memorable feuds where with Kurt Angle and the Big Show. My favourite was his rivalry with the Big Show because even as Show said himself Brock brought out the best in him and they both put on incredible matches including the Smackdown match where the ring collapses after a Superplex off the top rope.
Brocks rivalry with Kurt was also very memorable as they where both matched in technical ability and they put on one hell of a Wrestlemania main event at Wrestlemania 19.
This DVD displays a short documentary on how Brock started out and it includes his most memorable matches. Brock Lesnar vs Undertaker Hell In A Cell, Brock Lesnar vs Big Show Stretcher Match & Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle Wrestlemania 19 plus a few more matches.
Truly excellent DVD and it is a shame Brock left the WWE well into the prime of his career, lets hope that if Brock does return to the WWE that he has a longer stay there than 4 years but buy this DVD anyway.
