A good release that suffers from unnecessary flaws3
Whether you love him or hate him, no one can deny that John Cena is the biggest star of WWE today. He is exceptionally talented as a performer and I believe he doesn't get the respect he deserves as a wrestler. To me, Cena has shown that he can go with the best of them. The more I've seen him wrestle, the more of a fan I've become. I've enjoyed so many of his matches and consider him to be one of the best WWE Champions in history. So the time is right for a 3-disc set to be released.

When John Cena: My Life was first announced, I was excited and eager to own it. I was happy to have finally got it, and when I got home to watch it...I was hoping for a 3-disc set on par with WrestleMania releases and numerous legend DVDs. Unfortunately, what I had purchased was a DVD with many elements of great quality...balanced out by an equal number of unnecessary flaws.

Starting with the documentary, My Life shows what's both right and wrong with this whole set. The documentary covers the essentials we need to know about Cena and some of his best and most memorable career moments. His childhood, his getting into bodybuilding and wrestling, his early days in OVW, his debut in WWE, his metamorphosis into a hip-hop freestyle rapper, his great mikework, his classic feuds with JBL and Edge, the spinner championship belts, his unforgettable experience at ECW One Night Stand and times at WrestleMania, all make for excellent viewing. What's more, each moment is allocated the right amount of time.

But as mentioned earlier, there ARE flaws. And the first is such a major one that could EASILY have been avoided. Throughout the main documentary, there's absolutely no new interview footage with Cena himself. Frankly, that is such a rip-off. Although John's friends, family, co-workers, Vince and J.R. do provide very good insight and opinions of Cena as a talent and a person, watching the star himself give his own views of his career and life is the greatest strength of any wrestler's bio. And for that not to happen here takes so much away from the product.

Another problem with My Life is that at times it feels so disjointed. The documentary could have been better structured when it comes to looking back at the sequence of events. I also believe it wastes too much time when covering certain things. Looking at the success of his `You Can't See Me' album, The Marine and how big of a superstar he is, could all have been told in one chapter. And do we really need to spend TEN MINUTES focusing on Cena's signature moves and his weight training? Quite a lot of time is wasted here when it shouldn't be. Either the documentary should've been shorter in `less is more' fashion, or time could've been better spent focusing more on his career highlights.

Despite these problems, My Life nonetheless remains an enjoyable story. It does provide an entertaining insight into John Cena as a wrestler/performer and as a quality human being. There are many pros in the documentary that make it very good in areas. It's just unfortunate that it also suffers from problems that could've been avoided.

Extras-wise, the DVD set has plenty to satisfy viewing pleasure. The second disc is the best, featuring seven matches with Cena providing his opinion regarding each of them. Which is very odd. Cena can be on hand for extras but not his own documentary? And of all the great matches Cena has had, there's only room on this three-disc set for seven? Senseless.

Regardless, it's great to see Cena introduce the matches and the choice of them is very fine indeed. There's a quality match from OVW with Randy Orton, a great match with Chris Jericho, a good bout against Rikishi (though the oddest choice in this selection), his violently classic `I Quit' bout with JBL, his historic 6-man tag with Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels, his unforgettable title match with Rob Van Dam and his awesome TLC match against Edge. Although I'll forever question why his legendary Parking Lot Brawl with Eddie Guerrero wasn't included here, along with the awesome matches he's had over in 2007, the selection of matches is more than satisfactory and will please fans.

The second disc also features a great highlight of Cena's feud with Kevin Federline, some awesome interviews and promos, his enjoyable `Right Now' music video and some of the Champs' exploits outside of the squared circle. The third disc consists of nothing but episodes of `5 Questions with the Champ', a popular segment where John answers any five questions from the fans. Cena clearly had a lot of fun taking part in this, and I had a lot of fun watching these segments. John's great talents at promos/interviews shine through again here, making inclusion of these episodes a cracking addition to the set.

But I don't feel it was necessary to devote an entire disc to these things. It would've been wiser to include only a few episodes, as it is quite a challenge to watch through all these episodes in one go. And while the extra feature on disc 1 regarding Cena's car collection is interesting and shows how much of a fun-loving guy he is, this again is another feature that could've been highlighted in a few minutes instead of FORTY. The whole set wastes space on stuff that should be taking a backseat to wrestling, which is the focus here.

John Cena: My Life does have redeeming qualities, thankfully. So if you're a Cena fan, like me, then it has enough to please. For everyone else, this is one of the weaker WWE DVD releases. It's definitely worth a rent, but I would recommend thinking before buying. There's a lot of stuff that needs to be improved here. Hopefully, they'll get it absolutely right next time.

john cena certainly splits the wrestling purists, while he has the vote of the kids, the adult wrestling fans either wish he would fall of the face of the earth or laud him as the saviour of the business we love so much.
Cena has had some journey in the WWE,his journey before it is interesting as well and this 3 discer, while rushed, gives a good account of the man that is john cena.
dicc one features a nicely wrapped 2 hour documentary that features plenty of back slapping from those around the man such as vincent mcmahon who has plenty of superlatives to throw cenas way.
disc two features just 6 matches which is odd but some of them are very good indeed, others are just a bit safe but the dvd also contains a few nice extras as well, disc three features episodes of cenas ask john cena internet show that reveal cena to have a macabre sense of humour. The dvd could have been targeted for the young but is rated '18' so the risk is there for the WWE,will it sell,im sure it will,i enjoyed it but feel his story is better told when he has laced his boots for the last time.
