Thirty men will enter; only one will emerge with a pass to WrestleMania 24. the age of orton
royal rumble 2009 was an event that kicked off 2009 and what an event it was, four undercard matches followed by a rumble match that was almost on par with the greatest rumble of them all, that being 1992 when flair stunned the world with his performance.
The opening match of the night featured the ECW champ jackie swagger going up against matt hardy, this match was highly skilled and fought at an intense pace, those who think swagger is a little green may think again,he is a good heel and has plenty of talent that is all but realised,he should have been at mania 25,anyway,it was a good match that opened the night nicely.
The womans title was up next as the champ beth phoenix defended against melina, when you consider that these two women remain two of the best since lita and trish left then it was guaranteed to be a decent match, and it was if im honest, female matches have seldom gained praise from myself but this was a good match with good moves all around.
The World heavyweight championship was contested next as the champ john cena went up against a familiar foe in jbl who had shawn michaels in his corner, this was a good match, more of a brawl than not but enjoyable, there was controversy thrown in to keep the crowd on their toes and all in all this was a good match.
The WWE championship was contested next as the champ jef hardy went up against edge in a no disqualification match, this match was simply class,a really well fought match with some excellent spots and a real desire to win thrown in,the ending is indeed memorable and for close to twenty minutes both men gave their all.
The royal rumble match itself was up next, much of the talk was about triple h getting his hands on randy orton, randy had the legacy working for him and there was plenty of individual and combined battles throughout the rumble,i thought john morrison put in a great shift as did the undertaker, all in all this was a very good rumble.
2009 Off To An Exposive Start
From previous reviews, it didn't look like this year's Royal Rumble was as brilliant as last years, but I bought it anyway and started to watch it thinking it won't be as good. However I was wrong, well, yes and no. It's AS brilliant as Royal Rumble 2008.
ECW Championship Match
Jack Swagger vs. Matt Hardy
Correct choice of opener that truly had me engaged the entire time, the right hands Matt gives in the first minute are brutal and intense. The rest of the match was a mixture of solid wrestling including mat base offense by an impressive Swagger, and Hardy connecting with some awesome wrestling moves, including a moonsault. The action seemed fast and Matt and Swagger meshed well together and delivered a solid 10 minute bout. The action never disapoints once, even when Swagger connects with rest holds, you still find yourself on the edge of your seat. Just a top notch opener.

Women's Championship Match
Beth Phoenix vs. Melina
Now I wasn't looking forward to this, but I wasn't dreading it. I just didn't feel anything for it except it's a filler. Well, my expectations were confused, because I thoroughly enjoyed this encounter. Beth really impresses me with her strength, whilst Melina makes me believe she really is fighting a monster and is using all her strength to take her down. Like the ECW match, this bout has a mixture of stuff to create a sufficient 6 minute bout, that constantly makes you hooked.

World Heavyweight Championship Match
John Cena vs. JBL w/ Shawn Michaels
This is more of a match that isn't really about Cena. Sure he's the champion, but it's more about developing the storyline between Shawn Michaels and JBL.
That being said, it's quite a slow match, despite it arguably being one of their better one of one encounters, excluding their gimmick based affairs. Nothing occurs that we havn't seen before either. The same old routines by both men, and it only really gets intresting during the last 5 minutes when the action gets a little faster and HBK gets involved. Other than that, there's not much else to say about it. It goes on for about 15 mins, but thankfully it seems shorter than that.

No Disqualifications WWE Championship Match
Jeff Hardy vs. Edge w/ Chavo Guerrero
Certainly the most eciting undercard match of the night, which gets even more exciting when Vickie announcers it being a no dq match. A very outstanding undercard main event, despite it being slightly predictable, truly had everything you could ask for in a match. We see amazing high flying, mat based manuevers. Hardcore action including Jeff splashing off a tall ladder onto Chavo through the announcer table. But we saw some amaing counters and near falls, including Hardy countering the spear into the twist of fate. The ending like I said is predictable is some way, but yet again, it isn't.

Royal Rumble Match
For the 22nd time we have the Royal Rumble Match, which is on par with last years. It has a better first half and a weaker second half. The first 5 minutes, WOW! Fast and exhilerating. Morrison & Mysterio should definatley have a one on one match one day. Look out for Rey's headscissors, impressive, whilst Carlito comes in continuing the fast pace and hitting a springboard moonsault. MVP continues the pace with suplexs and clotheslines. Luckily Khali and Kozlov have a short visit, whilst HHH and Orton respectably take their place. JTG is the smarter choice out of Cryme Tyme, whilst we start building up with superstars including Chris Jericho, The Miz, Finlay, Priceless, Undertaker. Within, we see an awesome springboard counter by Orton into an RKO to Rey. CM Punk, Benjamin, Kingston, R-Truth, Kane, all come in to do their thing, inclduing Shelton hitting a double ddt off the top. RVDis the suprise entrant and by far has the biggest pop of the night. And shows the fans he's still got it. Nice bit where he leaps over HHH, when about to feel froggy.
Not entirely sure why, but after RVD (25) enters the booking become terrible. That's what I mean when sayng the match has a weaker 2nd half. Brian Kendrick, Santino, Hacksaw Duggan and Dolph Zigglar (why was he in the match? Who is he?) were the final few entrants and lasted ridiculusly short time, especially Santino but his charcter makes it justified. The Big Show is number 30, and yes he's a big star but was kind of disappointing considering last year we had the suprise John Cena return. Maybe they should of switched Show and RVD around.
Anywho after that we get about 10-15 mins of final action. Which is solid and well paced, but still,I just feel last years was better. The ending was booked well though. Overall, an exciting and rumble with some very good wrestling moves that aren't often seen in a rumble match, and some epic hang ons/ skin the cats. Excellent.
