Amazon.co.uk Review
Until now DreamWorks' acclaimed WW2 first-person shooter series Medal of Honor has been confined to the PSone, but with MOH Allied Assault the bestselling franchise makes it onto the PC. The first thing you'll notice is that the format is relatively unchanged. The OSS bunker is there in all its glory, as are the Pathe News-eque briefings and the fantastically atmospheric music and ambient sound.
But although the format is cosy and familiar for Medal heads, the move to PC has brought with it some great new features. Firstly although it's not squad-based, in several of the missions you will gain comrades in arms; you can't control them, but the speed of your actions will decide whether they live or die. Secondly the medal system has changed. Whereas the original was pretty formulaic, clear the level with over 75 per cent health and killing all enemies, in Allied Assault there are "secret missions" which you don't have to complete to clear the level but if you perform above and beyond the call of duty, such as rescuing a POW or risking life and limb to acquire a manifest, you are rewarded accordingly.
Graphically it's a bit disappointing. Some of the hedgerows in the boccage level are rather pixelated, but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in atmosphere. The fantastic (Indiana Jones alike) music is back and the sound is literally stunning as bullets, explosions and shrapnel rain about you. But what really raises MOH Allied Assault above Wolfenstein, is the Omaha Beach level. This is possibly the most intense war-gaming experience ever on a PC. Around you people are crying, praying, dieing and you having to run up a beach to the shingle dodging a hail of machine gun bullets. It's insanely difficult to make it, even on easy level, but you will be gripped by the sheer full-on intensity of the experience, so much so that the next time you see Saving Private Ryan you'll nod sadly remembering how you were there. --Kristen Bowditch
Manufacturer's Description
In Medal of Honor Allied Assault from Electronic Arts, players will assume the role of Lt. Mike Powell, member of the famed 1st Ranger Battalion who gets recruited by the OSS and battles through over 20 levels that are based on historical military campaigns of World War II.
Set during the most trying years of the war, 1942-1945, Medal of Honor Allied Assault gives players a sense of the courage it took to survive the landings at Normandy, the assault at Arzew, a rendezvous with the Resistance outside the village of St. Lo, and the push through the heavily defended border of Germany itself to take the bridge at Remagen.
Staying true to all the gameplay features that made Medal of Honor one of the most acclaimed and best-selling games launched in 1999, Medal of Honor Allied Assault will build on the success of that game and add new player weapons, new interactive Allied vehicles such as Sherman tanks and M3 Half Tracks, smarter enemy AI, and the ability to call for artillery strikes.
Medal of Honor Allied Assault is headquartered in Cabinet War Rooms at Whitehall, dispatching players on numerous campaigns, each with specific objectives to meet in terms of infiltration, execution and exfiltration. Missions will be based in the deserts of North Africa, on the bloody shores of France, across the tundra of Norway, and, ultimately, over the Rhine into Nazi Germany. These missions range from silencing the gun batteries at Port Arzew, to sabotaging U-boats at the sub pens of Trondheim, surviving the landing at Omaha Beach, and finally, holding the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen- the only battle where the Germans used their dreaded V2 rockets in a tactical capacity.

Pushing the FPS genre forwards ......
Well, FPS games have landmarks - DOOM, QUAKE, HALF LIFE, UT ...... and now we have tough battle for the next landmark game.
RTCW - yeah its a great engine and it looks lovely, but nothing too new that pushes things forward.
AVP2 - again, good ideas but still doesn't "feel" right.
So what about MOH:AA? Well the first thing i noticed was that it was one of the most realistic and gritty FPS's I have played. For the first time it feels more like real combat and less like simulated worlds.
The enemy AI is basically superb. It is the best use of opponents using cover i have seen - which just adds to the realism.
Sound is top notch - the shouts of the enemy and the desperate radio announcments sound authentic and really add to the feel of the game. Ambient effects are great.
Graphics - locations are very well done, vehicles very well done, player models very good ..... basically well thought out levels.
Playability - its like playing the soldiers from half life all the time, with each encounter containing a different twist and turn of events to create a freash experience in each battle.
If you have watched the series Band of Brothers, it basically is as close as you can get to that without actually being in WW2.
Only one problem - no blood unless you download unofficial patches. I am sorry but to make the game a succesful replication of WW2 combat you need blood guts and glory. If somone applied the damage realism of Soldier of Fortune and the GeoMod tech of Red Faction, it would be the game to mark all others by for years to come.
Unforgettable
As a newcomer to PC gaming (and FPShooters) I was keen to warm up to it all with a decent game - and, frankly, I can't believe they can come any better than this. This is a top-notch, first rate gaming experience.
The graphics are incredibly smoothe and realistic. The characters, weapons, scenery and buildings are presented beautifully. The sound is even more incredible; the gun shots, explosions, ambience, make you feel even more like you're there. Add the music (which is an excellent complimentary score) and the vocal talent, and you have yourself a blockbuster movie. There are so many things here that contribute to the high standard of presentation.
As for the gameplay, this is well balanced. The easy, user-friendly interface means you can't go wrong. The levels are nice to roam about in but perhaps the compass guide makes things too 'straight-forward' at times. The learning curve is just right, and as the missions go on you are encouraged to use different strategies. This isn't a gung-ho shoot-fest; you must execute patience and precision at times, rather than shooting off clip after clip. It would be dull if this were the case.
The Omaha beach mission is a major highlight (and one to come back to again and again for the sheer thrill of it), although it did seem a little early on in the game. As epic as it was it probably deserved to be something looked forward to and conquered later on. The U-boat level is nice change of pace (having the Nazi soldiers bidding you 'Gutten tag' and what not when you're dressed as an Officer), and a good example of how each level differs while keeping you hooked and on-edge. You're gonna have to re-play missions until you learn how to best handle them. And whether it's storming beaches, riding on the back of a jeep with a machine gun, blasting buildings in a King Tiger tank, sneaking down railway tracks and picking off snipers from a distance, you're gonna be doing them again and again.
It is a shame the game ends so abruptly, but still MOH: Allied Assault draws you in, keeps you hooked, is so realistic it makes you care for your comrades and really feel triumphant at the end of each mission. Excellent.
Jaw Dropping!!
I'm not normally a great fan of first person shooters, I found that they were pretty much all the same and had storylines that made the tweenies look realistic. I wasn't sure weather to hit the buy now button or not, after reading a few reviews I decided to give it a try. WOW!!!! As soon as the first mission loaded I was hooked. Stunning visuals and an awesome soundtrack makes this game an essential to your collection. Graphics making you fell as if YOU are fighting the battles yourself is waht games should always be like. The soundtrack is brilliant, a sort of John Williams soundtrack that even puts the great Metal Gear Solid 2 to shame. The plot is vert realistic from imvading a German village (great) to running out of the sea onto the shore to raid the German trenches and gun towers. The character AI is very impressive, Soldiers will talk to each other and act depending on what you do, for instance, if you hessitate to shoot, the sodier will say things like "what the hell's the matter with you? shoot!" Overall this game is a must buy. 10/10 War Never Looked So Good
