Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
The only game based directly on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, this is your chance to control Cap’n Jack Sparrow as he staggers his way through sword fights in his quest to save his own soul from Davy Jones.

The lowdown:
Movie tie-ins don’t have the best of reputations in the video games world but this does go to some effort to try and repeat the easy charm and constant action of Dead Man’s Chest. The game looks great at least, with Jack’s peculiar swagger replicated perfectly, and the movie soundtrack is superb. There’s also some neat puzzles to solve in the game, usually revolving around blowing up large portions of the scenery with exploding barrels. The combat though is a might too simplistic for its own good, with a strictly regimented way of fighting the three different styles of enemy.

Most exciting moment:
The best bit by far in the game is the completely separate multiplayer mode where you get to control your own pirate ship on the high seas. It’s a great little action game and with four friends a lot more fun than most of the single player game.

Since you ask:
Dead Man’s Chest is available on all three portable formats but not on the home consoles or PC. Instead the PS2 and PC has a Pirates of the Caribbean game named The Legend of Jack Sparrow, which is more of a prequel to the new movie.

The bottom line:
A good movie tie-in but only an average game.

Manufacturer's Description
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest lets gamers embark on a high-seas adventure that parallels events from the hit movie. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a swashbuckling third-person action/adventure video game in which players engage in action that reflects the cunning world of the film - with an abundance of disloyalty, humour and revenge.

In the Nintendo DS version, players embark on a daring adventure as each of the three main characters - Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Each character has his or her own signature fight move. The Nintendo DS version also includes three two-player mini-games that can be played via local wireless. The mini-games include Walk The Plank, Boom Barge and Shoot The Monkey.

Really good game5
4.5 Star really because it's funny, active, enjoyable and not too bloodthirsty, but it was over too quickly (Although I am really enjoying playing it again and finding lots of new collectables such as other characters and other weapons)! I like it because there are extras as well as the story, and there are unlockables and even Mini-games. I also like it because it's 3D instead of 2D, in other words it's not a Run-Along game and it's got extremely good graphics. I also like the idea of the enemies leaving something behind when they're defeated. This is my first DS game and overall I think it is better than my PS2.

I award this game four (st)arrs!4
This game is great in many ways and, though not astounding in every department, provides an amusing and challenging romp through locations immediatley recognisable to those who have seen the latest film. Its gameplay value is high and will not leave you bored just moments after commencing play. The ability to control either Jack, Will or Elizabeth (and later other characters including Norrington and Beckett) means that previously attempted levels can be re-played and enjoyed over again, while the large range of weapons available provides variety for otherwise repetative combat, as do the unlockable combos and the individual character's signature moves. The 3D graphics are bright and appealing, though somewhat blocky with frequent pixellation of backdrops and some texture stretching. The sound effects are adequate, with nice ambient sounds fitting the location and the characters often saying little phrases during combat. The music however is relatively poor, (whenever I play the game I simply set the music volume to silent and whack on the film soundtrack). The featured mini-games are nothing special and will not maintain a huge amount of consistent interest but still offer the chance to use the stylus to do things like Shoot the Monkey, Walk the Plank and blow up an enemy ship. Multi-player mode will considerably increase the enjoyment of these games.

Overall this game performs very well in general and makes a stirling effort to emulate the film's events. It is let down slightly on its music and occasionally its graphics but none-the-less it should appeal to people who are either fans of the film and/or like the slash-and-hack genre of game.
