A real "CUPRINOL" machine
This is what I call a real CUPRINOL machine because it does exactly what it says on the box. Once I'd made all the connections, then squeezed the fairly large machine into the slot that used to house my VCR, I was ready to switch on. Auto tune found all the available analogue channels and a quick look at the manual had me connected to my freeview box and recording to the HDD in minutes. So far I've tried VHS playback (great picture from a very old recording), HDD record from freeview box and playback (broadcast quality), Time Shift during recording (works fine) and recording from HDD to DVD (disc finalised with no problems). I've yet to try recording from VHS to HDD/DVD but have no reason to think it will be a problem. The machine makes a slight motor sound in DVD use but much is quieter than a VCR and I can't hear anything at all in HDD use. This is a superb piece of kit for the money! UPDATE Jan 2009 - just copied a VHS favourite recording to HDD, edited it and output to DVD. All worked as it should do. I still love this bit of kit!
Toshiba recording fun!
Truly an amazing machine. It records from VHS/DVD to the Hard Drive. From the Hard Drive to DVD. From Sky/TV to the Hard Drive and I understand it records straight from the TV to DVD/VHS. It is fairly simple to operate - takes a bit of getting used to. The Hard Drive has a good capacity and you can choose the quality of recording onto this and DVD. Truly versatile and not bad value for money on Amazon compared to many other stores.
Can't record chapters on DVD-R discs...
I bought this machine to transfer my VHS tape collection onto DVD discs, via the HDD. I have tried everything, but I've been unable to make DVDs with chapter markings - they are easy to place on the HDD, but when the DVD is recorded, there is only one title & no chapters. I called the help line & was told I'd have to record onto the HDD at the same settings as the recording to DVD. I tried, but it still didn't work. The help line then said I would have to do high speed dubbing to keep the chapter markers (which makes no sense); however High Speed dubbing is not an option unless you're using DVD-RW discs & recording as DVD-VR, not DVD-Video. I think the machine is faulty, but the help line claim you can't make DVD's with chapters (so why have the option on the HDD?). Not recommended for VHS to DVD use!
