High Definition television is a broadcast and pre-recorded video format that delivers picture quality vastly superior to standard definition television and even DVD. The standard TV broadcast system in the UK (PAL) creates a picture with 576 lines made up of two half-resolution frames interlaced together. HDTV offers up to 8 times more detail and clarity thanks to using one of two formats: 720p: 720 lines progressively scanned Toshiba’s REGZA 1080HD televisions are compatible with both HDTV standards and automatically detect and decode the correct format for hassle-free HD viewing. In addition, active internal scaling ensures standard TV broadcasts are up-scaled to 1080 lines to fill the screen with enhanced standard definition images. Many LCD TVs are HD-Ready, this means they have a screen resolution of either 1280 x 720 or 1366 x 768 pixels. These TVs will reproduce over 1 million pixels, and deliver a stunning HD image with most screen sizes, Toshiba REGZA 1080HD televisions maximize large screen High Definition reproduction by using over 2 million pixels. This is thanks to the 1920 x 1080 screen resolution. |
The WLT66 range boasts a market-leading 2 HDMI connections. Connecting via HDMI replaces the multiple cables required with analogue AV connections and dramatically simplifies home cinema instalation.HDMI offers numerous additional benefits including PC compatibility, automatic format adjustment, as well as automatic configuration of the system to turn on or off the components necessary to view a DVD, listen to a CD or watch cable or satellite TV.

It is essential that display technology keeps pace with the dramatic increase in picture quality offered by HD broadcasts. Active Vision LCD is a high performance picture processing system designed to produce a stunning image by enhancing four core elements of a television picture: Detail: Active Vision LCD reproduces three times more pixels than a conventional LCD TV. |
The 32WL66 features enhanced SRS WOW technology which creates a wider audio ‘sweet spot’ from the built-in stereo speakers, for a fuller, richer and deeper sound than from a conventional system. The 32WL66 also boasts 'Stable Sound', a clever feature which keeps the audio levels within a certain dB range preventing unexplained increases in sound levels which often occur during the commercial breaks. Digital TV broadcasting has allowed adverts to use louder-than average sound or music to attract viewers attention. This can be highly annoying, particularly late at night, and most HDTVs simply ignore the problem. The 42WLT66 and 47WLT66 offer Toshiba’s Stable Sound feature that dynamically adjusts volume to keep TV programmes and adverts a near constant sound level. |

Fantastic TV, worth every penny.
I just received this TV this morning so I thought I would jot down my initial thoughts. The first thing I have to comment on is how quick it was to set-up. Within 30 minutes of putting it on top of my TV stand I had everything connected (TV, Xbox and DVD/HDD recorder), the TV tuned and I was playing Tomb Raider. It comes with built in Freeview but you can also quite easily switch to analogue. The picture is fantastic when on Digital, and even the analogue one isn't too shabby. The common complaint about the 'black' levels with LCD TV's is not present here, the blacks like all colours are perfect. The remote control is a dream to use and has a great button to switch back to the last channel you were watching which is a neat addition. The only negative thing I have heard about this TV is that it doesn't do picture on picture, but that is not a great loss if you've never had it before! At this price this TV is a steal and I can highly recomend it.
BEST LCD AROUND.
This tv is good with analogue (provided you get a strong signal),great with dvd,s and superb with high-def stuff(what there is of it!, I was shocked to discover how little HD stuff there is on Sky HD channels but hopefully it will grow fast).Standard definition Sky is of variable quality, presumably depending on how compressed the signal has been but most programmes look fine. You will have to adjust the picture settings as the backlight and contrast are set at maximum out the box which makes for a blindingly bright picture.I eventually settled for Backlight-50(30 when watching in the dark),Contrast-70,brightness-53,Colour-43,Sharpness and Tint should both be left at zero.Turn off all 'picture enhancers'(Anyone who knows about tv calibration will tell you that they actually spoil the picture) that is 'black-stretch,MPEG NR and DNR.Set colour temp to NORMAL.I used a calibration disc to help me arrive at these settings and I now get great pictures from all sources. One other thing, turn off the BASS BOOST as it makes speech muffled.
Lovely LCD TV
I decided to go for an LCD TV for two reasons: my old 28" CRT TV was huge and was simply taking up too much space, and I wanted to be able to play on my Xbox 360 in high definition.
From a size point of view, this Toshiba is great. Super slim, quite light and its black and silver finish is easy on the eye too. It has plenty of connectivity, as you can see in the spec above.
I found the TV very easy to set-up and the Freeview tuner is very good. I can't get every available channel in my area yet, but those I can get come through very well and the built-in TV guide is impressive.
The picture is vibrant and colour reproduction is good - even blacks mostly look pretty convincing rather than adopting the blue tinge that some LCD TVs can suffer from. I have experienced some image ghosting, smearing and colour banding in apparently lower quality broadcasts and some DVDs. I'm not sure the response time on this screen is as good as it could be, but the majority of the time it seems to be OK.
I certainly agree with reviewer ILC that the TV seems to give a better image without the various built-in enhancers switched on. It's worth spending some time experimenting to see what you find best.
Although the 32LWT66 does not have additional speakers as standard, I have so far found the speakers in the set do a great job. Toshiba have included the SRS WOW sound system, and this coupled with bass boost can give a rich and satisfying sound.
Naturally, this set is HD ready and I haven't got Sky HD or anything like it so can't comment much on the high definition capability. My Xbox 360 image in HD looks very good though. On regular Sky and Freeview the picture is good but it does highlight just how poor Sky's transmitted picture quality can be on some channels at some times. It's acceptable but has made me look forward to the time when HD is more of a standard and cheaper.
This is a good value TV with plenty of HD connectivity for the future and a decent level of performance for now. Picture quality is not as good as I would like, but I guess that is at least partly down to the signal being pumped in, and my set came with one dead pixel - no big deal as it's not noticeable and well, well, well within Toshiba's acceptable dead pixel limit. Trust me, I asked them!
Oh, and the remote may appear to be a bit cheap, but it does a fine job.

High-definition Multimedia Interface is the new industry standard for connecting AV components.HDMI allows the transmission of uncompressed digital video and audio content over a single cable. As there is no conversion of the signal from digital to analogue and back again ( as with a SCART lead for example) , the orgional quality is retained.
