Customer Reviews

Very good indeed, if less flexible than a Pronto4
Like other reviewers, I have come to the Harmony via Philips Pronto, Pronto NEO, and various one-for-all products. So far, nothing has quite 'hit the mark' and I must confess, having read the logitech forums I was very worried about placing an order.

I needn't have worried. The product works well and looks great. It ships with a CD that only contains XP, Mac and W2000 drivers, though, so I went to logitech and downloaded their new Vista-compatible software. I ran that first, and then connected to the unit, having first charged it and noted down the product details of all my kit.

The software downloads firmware updates automatically and reboots the unit - all worked fine. The forums say that certain firewalls have difficulty, but using IE7 on a vista laptop with Norton 360 worked just fine for me. Once the unit reboots, you identify the kit and the logitech servers try to configure the Harmony 1000 for you. You need a very stable internet connection, here, as you have to be connected all the time (or it starts again). It's really important that you arrange this - I'd hate to try setup on a flaky or dial-up connection.

The configuration program does seem (or did to me) to be likely to get it wrong, and some of your gear might be hard to find, but just when you start thinking 'this isn't going to work', it gives you the option to 'learn' a button or two. From that it narrows down the exact product in its database (even if you had mis-named it), and suddenly everything is complete.

You might need to get used to 'activity-based' remotes (I want to watch a DVD, for example, would turn on your TV (or your projector), turn on your DVD player, turn on your receiver (if you listen through that - you can choose at setup time) and adjust the volume). Because the unit remembers the on/off state of all your kit, it only switches on if it needs to - very impressive.

The unit is tilt-sensitive to wake it up, is made of quality brushed aluminium and the touch-screen is very sensitive and easily visible (both real complaints I had with my old Pronto). You can't, unfortunately, customise buttons (but you can name favourite channels with logos). Also, there's still no clock (unlike in the photos).

Overall, it's a great product. Just give yourself a good half-hour to set it up, and get the product codes for your hifi kit first, and download the software from logitech, rather than using the out-of-date CD supplied. You'll need a good stable internet connection and a forgiving firewall (as I said, Norton was fine).

If you can give it the setup time - go for it!

The Logitech Harmony 1100 is now out (at a much increased price). It's flash-based, rather than Java based, and has the clock that is missing here, but the price hike is so huge that it goes into Pronto- and custom-installer territory. For now, at least, I'd stick with the 1000.

Does NOT support Z-Wave4
If you just want to control IR devices, then this is a great product
(although the Harmony software requires you to be connected to the Internet, and you can't search the product database to see if your product is supported before you add it - even if your product is in the database, it might not be supported).

However, I bought it because both this Amazon product page and the Logitech website indicate that it has Z-Wave Wireless support.
However, this is for the optional RF-Extender only.
You *cannot* use the Harmony 1000 to control Z-Wave Lighting Modules and Z-Wave Home Automation Modules.

Apparently this was planned for the device (and was in the original product blurb) but Logitech pulled it at the last moment (frustratingly, the ability to control Z-Wave devices is still in the hardware, but disabled in firmware).

So if you want to control Z-Wave Lighting and Z-Wave Wireless devices (e.g. control lighting, and turn off power sockets), you'll want to get the Harmony 895.

Here's hoping Amazon will take back my Harmony 1000...

Side Note: Amazon, can you please update the Manufacturer's Description above and remove the line about this remote having Z-Wave support?

Touch-tastic5
Having used 5 different remotes for the last 12 months I thought it was time to get into the 21st Century. A techie friend of mine recommended the Harmony 1000 to me and quite frankly I've never looked back. In fact, I can't believe I didn't get a Harmony sooner!

The set-up and connection was utterly effortless and very straightforward. Just a bit of question answering and input - all done very quickly. The one-touch control is really easy to use and the large colour screen makes functionality and navigation a breeze. Aside from that I also think that it looks visually impressive - a very cool piece of kit!

Touch wood I haven't had any issues with the control freezing but I did check this before buying and was told that this issue had been resolved with a recent software update. I was also reassured about my purchase recently after noticing HiFi had given it 5 stars.
