Synopsis
After the success of Knocked Up, Seth Rogen pairs up with another comely comedienne in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. In this Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) comedy, two desperate friends (Rogen and Slither's Elizabeth Banks--Meet Dave, W) decide to earn a little extra money by creating their own adult film, but they also discover that they may be more than just pals.

A Comedy With an Awkward Climax2
On the back of the case for this dvd there is a quote from a critic assuring you that if you are a fan of 40 Year Old Virgin and Superbad, then you'll dig this. Well, I would disagree. Whilst Zack and Miri has all the ingredients of a Judd Apatow film (the cast, gross-out moments, schmaltz), the end product is hammy and under-cooked.

The first section of the film has some genuinely funny moments. I think Seth Rogen does a fine job, as does Elizabeth Banks and Jason Mewes (Jay). However, the film then trails off into farcical, saccharine sweet rom-com fare, and it just doesn't work at all.

I have no doubt that Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) is a hard working guy and I have a certain amount of respect for him, however there is a distinct lack of consistency in his works, with Zack and Miri Make a Porno being no exception.

The Citizen Kane of home porno movie making comedies5
Firstly, can I ask people why when writing a review they simply recount the plot? Anyway.... silly, juvenile, crass and damn fantastic. No, it is not a movie to watch on a first date (unless you are feeling VERY lucky), but it is still one of the funniest things I have seen in years. This is Kevin Smith putting Clerks 2 well behind him and making a film he knew that loads of people would hate in order to entertain those of us that are bored witless by most modern comedies.

A new breed of rom com... for boys5
For me, I am enjoying this new genre of films. This film, like forgetting Sarah Marshall, is really a rom com for boys. This, I guess, is aimed for people like myself, where the teen romp comedies like American Pie are beginning to feel a bit juvenile, but you want a comedy that is a bit saucy with some adult humour. That certainly describes this movie! As a Kevin Smith fan, I was hoping this would be good, and it certainly was. With such a controversial idea for the plot, the movie is actually quite mainstream in it's direction and ideas, unlike some of his previous efforts which had a much smaller/specialist target audience. However saying that, don't buy this if you are easily offended, with plenty of sex and toilet humour, it's not one for the kids :-)
I really enjoyed this movie, and as Seth Rogan is my long lost twin... (according to my friends anyway) I found this especially enjoyable!
