Customer Reviews
Great value if a 24" screen is too big for your desk, and if your eyesight is up to it.
Pros:
-Cheap!
-Great resolution for a 21.5" monitor.
-VGA, DVI & HDMI input.
-2ms is great for games
Cons
-Backlight bleed from top and bottom, visible on dark/black screens (doesn't bother me!).
-Shiny plastic surround attracts dust like no other!
-Colour/brightness etc. needs tweaking out of the box.
-Lightweight plastic stand has a big footprint on the desk.
Best 1080 lcd I have seen at this size
I must say this is a great LCD. The support for 1080 and the built in sound make it ideal for a PS3 or Xbox 360 (esp. the Elite which has HDMI built in)
Viewing angle is great, me and my Son can sit at opposite ends of the room while playing the Xbox and we can both see the screen clearly. The contrast is very good, blacks are dark, whites are bright. Colours are full and nothing is washed out. My LCD came with no dead pixels.
The sound is "ok" I wouldn't have expected deep bass out of a small LCD. Took me a while to understand how to quickly turn the volume up/down without having to step through the menus (just press volume up before pressing volume down)
I've been asked a few times "does the sound from an Xbox 360 Elite go though the HDMI connector", the answer is yes, so you only have to connect the HDMI cable to get video and sound on this Asus LCD.
I also connected this LCD to a Freeview box and a DVD that has HDMI output and upscales to 1080p. The quality was spot on. A screen this small doesn't show the pixel artifacts that larger screens show, even standard definition looks HD. I know people say you need a 37" plus screen to get the best from HD, but as most video is still on DVD or broadcast 576i (i.e. freeview) why spend the money on a larger screen that will only stretch the 576i picture and introduce artifacts? This screen also stretches the pixels but the pixels are so small that artifacts can not be seen.
Playing a Blu Ray disc thiough the LCD. I got a copy of "Wall-E" on Blu Ray, it really shows how good this LCD is. Video is very crisp. As a test I got a copy of Wall-E on DVD and sat switching between the blu ray and DVD versions, blu ray wins but the DVD version was 95% as good. Again this is because the screen is 22" and the pixels are so small that defects in the video are very hard to spot.
I gave this LCD 4* out of 5 as the sound could have had more Bass, I wouldn't want to have this in a large busy living room, the sound would be too weak, but otherwise the Asus VH226H is a high quality product, great for anyone wanting a decent size screen for a PS3 or Xbox 360 or for a bedroom connected to a freeview box with an HDMI output.
Excellent product for a dual monitor setup
Bought two of these recently when they were on offer by Amazon at £146.99. Delivery was swift and the packaging was undamaged during delivery by CityLink. Both monitor boxes were still sealed with the Asus packing tape (unlike some online retailers where I receive an open boxed monitor which sometimes leaves me wondering if it has been returned previously or checked for dead pixels).
After setting the monitors up I was happy to find there was no dead pixels or stuck sub-pixels. I also checked for backlight bleed and there is a small amount of bleeding at the top and bottom of the panel which doesn't concern me at all as it's only visible in the dark with a dark/black background.
Vertical viewing angles (viewing from above or from below) are somewhat similar to previous generation TN panels (the VH226H uses the latest LG TN panel). Colour shifting occurs when viewing from above and is linked to the contrast setting so with the contrast setting at around 70+ some colours can exhibit a pink tinge and the pink tinge become more pronounced the higher the contrast setting. The picture also darkens when viewing from below and can become unusably dark depending on the viewing angle making these screens somewhat unsuitable for small children unless they are able to have the monitor positioned at a level where the image isn't too dark. Normal viewing sitting in front of the monitor it's just like any other TN panel and is perfectly adequate for my needs.
The factory settings for the colour profiles is also adequate for my use but perhaps the red is too high which could be causing the pink tinges at the higher contrast settings. I don't have a colour calibration device nor do I require one because colour accuracy isn't really something that concerns me. Anyone requiring better colour accuracy will likely feel it is necessary to tweak the colour settings.
Overall picture quality is perfectly adequate for a TN panel although obviously it could be improved upon especially when compared to the more expensive panel types such as PVA or IPS panels. The black level and the colours are perfectly fine for my use but again not quite as good as you would see on the more expensive panel types.
This is a Full HD 22" monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 which could be considered too high a resolution for PC desktop use. The text and icons are a little too small for my liking so I have the monitor sitting close making viewing more than acceptable but my primary use of the monitors will require them both to be very close so I intend to buy two Ergotron LX desk mount arms for complete freedom of movement.
The monitor inputs are VGA, DVI and HDMI (and a sound input) which at this price is excellent value for money and there is also a dedicated button for switching inputs. It also has a sound output socket should you decide to use external speakers. The build quality is more than good enough for the price and while the speakers are basic and the sound quality is lacking at least they are loud enough to be usable.
I also tested one with my Xbox 360 using HDMI and it was a simple case of connecting it up and switching it on. As is usual with TN panels the pixel response time was excellent with no ghosting problems or input lag.
Overall I am very impressed with my VH226H monitors especially for the price I paid and for general desktop or gaming use I wouldn't hesitate to recommend buying one or more of them.
