Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sophomoric is too weak a word by at least half to describe the utter silliness Date Movie revels in at every turn. But that's exactly the point of this effort in lowbrow slapstick that proudly proclaims it was created by two of the six writers of the Scary Movie franchise. Adhering to the same spoof formula of those movie romps, Date Movie lampoons countless other current movie characters and plot themes, plus a few that might be a little old for the core audience of youngsters to remember. Date Movie isn't quite as successful in keeping the gags at the same pace they came in the Scary Movies, but it will certainly satisfy those with a taste for tasteless humor. The wisp of a story involves fat girl Julia Jones, played by Alyson Hannigan, who quickly becomes as thin and pretty as she was in the American Pie movies and on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You'll lose count how many movie references writer/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer throw in her path as she searches for true love in a world gone mad. Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet the Fockers, King Kong, Lord of the Rings, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones' Diary, and Kill Bill, are just a few of the movies that get unkindly homage. There's also plenty of flatulence, mild sexual ribaldry, and the kind of bad taste humor that will utterly delight the pubescent and teenage audience this movie was made for. --Ted Fry

Synopsis

Unusually Disappointing2
I had been looking forward to watching Date Movie, and I even had the DVD preordered. I thought that this was going to be a really funny and enjoyable film. I am a fan of Alyson Hannigan and I thought that she was simply sensentional in the American Pie films. Sadly Date Movie has nothing going for it. I enjoyed the first five minutes of the film and that is about it. It doesn't make any sense. I kepted hoping that it was building up to something but it does not. I can't help wondering why in what is basicly as spoof of romantic comedies, they would have a scene with Frodo from The Lord Of The Rings selling the 'one ring' it's like they've decided to stick the scene in just to confuse people. Or to try and keep the film from getting boring, which I feel it really does. I only giggled lightly in a few places and I don't think that I ever laughed. Unless you find a puppet cat sitting on a toliet funny I suggest you avoid this film as it has missed the mark entirely. It has been awarded two stars on the medit of Alyson Hannigan acting and the first five minutes of the film.

An entertaining waste of time.4
Okay, so this movie isn't replete with fine performances, or beset with stunning special effects. What it does have is a wicked sense of humour and the tendency to shamelessly parody pretty much every chick flick on the shelves.

You won't be enlightened, challenged or enriched. You may spend half the movie working out what movies have been spoofed, and you may just sit and gaze at Alyson Hannigan. Whatever way you go you'll be entertained, but only for a short time as this movie doesn't have the ground breaking spoofing of the Airplane/Naked Gun ilk and doesn't have the poignant humour of the likes of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

If you're an "American Pie" fan, you'll probably enjoy it more than the average viewer. Fortunately, I am!

Wait a minute, this was actually a movie...O sorry...I thought I was taking a pop-culture quiz2
I have to admit the previews showcase this movie really well but unfortunately they didn't deliver. This movie ended up misleading a lot of viewers due to its lack of creativity. Can you imagine the audience's reaction in the theater watching this film, if you turn your head either left or right you would have been provided more laughs than the actual movie itself.

I for one could not decide whether I find it comical or depressing that this film managed to parody movie scenes and make them worse. Truly, the people saying these writers are talented are wrong, it takes true talent to be able to make something like this work. The movie is a complete non squinter too. In one scene, after the family has toasted at the rehearsal wedding dinner table, Lil' Jon comes in and says, "What? Yeeeeeah. Okay." and that's the punch line. Pointless.

On the whole, though, 95% of this movie is just mind-numbingly bad. And not just because it has a lot of toilet humor and fat person jokes. The worst parts of the movie are the ones that are not only devoid of humor, but they just flat out are so stupid they don't make sense. I've never had an experience where I've sat through an hour and a half film and felt like I was watching a bunch of two minute clips of stupidity that had almost nothing to do with each other.

"Date Movie" was all over the place and clearly done a mess on itself. But I tell you what I scored pretty high on naming all the spoofs. Honestly stick with the movies that know what there doing, you know who they are.
