Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Up until this point in her career Janet Jackson had been the good little girl of the family Jackson. 1993's Janet is where she gets all grown up and sexy--gone are the days of "Let's Wait a While", replaced instead by tracks chronicling the joys of being able to "boom boom boom until noon noon noon" ("Throb"). Janet contains something for everyone, from the huge-scale epic "Back" (with orchestral and operatic backing!) to poppier offerings such as "That's the Way Love Goes" and "Because of Love"; from the mushy ballads which she does so well ("Again") to the dance grooves which have you picturing synchronised dance routines in your head ("You Want This", "If"); and she even has a vague stab at folk on "What'll I Do". Janet co-wrote and produced the entire album with long-time collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and it features a handful of hits, as well as even more of the between-song interludes of which she has always been so fond. This was the album that made Janet a superstar, and on it, you can hear why. --Ronita Dutta

CD Description
With JANET, the crown princess of the Jackson family steps out from behind her carefully buffed image to create a sensual new musical persona for herself. Producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis play cat and mouse with modern R&B forms by juxtaposing classic Motown samples (the Supremes on "You Want This" and "If") and Jackson 5 harmonies against slamming dancegrooves, as echoes of girl group innocence crash head on with Janet's willful sexuality (to particular effect on ballads like "Where Are You Now" and "The Body That Loves You").
Janet Jackson's ambition rises to the level of her talent on a number of JANET's songs. On "This Time" a tender acoustic overture (punctuated by Kathleen Battle's elegant operatic soprano) gives way to a dark dance track and tales of lovegone sour, while her moaning hyperventilations on "Throb" would give Donna Summer pause, as Janet imparts a sleek hip-hop aura to the traditional disco groove. Elsewhere JANET mixes and matches different genres with grace and good humor, from the Stax/Volt country funk of "What'll I Do", to the jitterbugging dance lines of "Funky Big Band" and the stand-up-and-be-proud shouts of "New Agenda". JANET backs away ever so slightly from the hard dance grooves that originally cemented her reputation, to focus instead on her emerging depth as a ballad singer and canny pop-diva.

Customer Reviews

Classic Janet Jackson5
This is one of Janet Jackson's grooviest and most accessible albums. It has a feel-good vibe and it features signature Janet Jackson tracks like 'That's The Way Love Goes', 'Again' and 'Anytime,Anyplace'. It also contains fantastic dance tunes such as 'If', 'Throb' and 'You Want This'. A real treat on the album is the rock-opera song 'Back'(featuring opera star Kathleen Battle), one of the album's stand out tracks. There is something for everyone on this album. It is also quite sensual. All in all, this is my favourite Janet Jackson album and one of the best R n'B albums of the '90's.

Go On Miss Janet...5
"Janet", is one of Janet Jackson's best, most groundbreaking albums. With "Janet", Janet Jackson opened up a new chapter in her life, with a more free, sexual look and attitude.

This album cannot be catalogued as R&B, Janet explores many different genres of music in the songs on this album. Janet samples R&B, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Pop, Dance, Opera, Disco, Folk, Country, Ballads, and much more. Best tracks include That's The Way Love Goes, with it's smooth, sensual sound, one of Janet Jackson's signature tracks. Throb, with it's pulsating erotic, disco beat. Because Of Love, If, and You Want This mainly pop and dance that will make you want to dance and/or sing along. This Time (Featuring Kathleen Battle, an opera star), It sounds like a weird mix, but it all sounds right when you listen to it. Anytime Anyplace with it's slow and sexy vibe, and ballads like Where Are You Now and Again.

"Janet" is a must for any real music fan. Don't take my word for it, listen for yourself, you won't regret it.

Well worth a listen5
A varied album with something for everyone (not for those easily offended though) - a change from her previous stuff - but a welcome change I think. Got 'Til It's Gone is a surprisingly good track featuring Q-tip and samples of Joni Mitchell's original version. All in all a great album well worth a listen!
