Ultimate Rave
I have been a Prince fan since 1989 and saw him live on the "Diamonds and Pearls", "Act II", and when he came to London with Chaka Khan and Larry Graham to perform one night at "Wembley Arena in September 1998" which was the best live performance I had ever seen. "The One night Alone" tour was good but ultimately disappointing after seeing him on these previous tours.
Prince still holds the title of producing one of the best concert films ever made, "Sign of the Times" which captured the frenetic genius of his showmanship at the Ahoy in Rotterdam.
"Rave to the Joy Fantastic" is a compilation of Prince songs old and new, and those associated artists who he has worked with over the years such as the "The Time" and "George Clinton".
This DVD captures a fraction of Prince's genius, including amazing singing throughout, beautiful guitar work in "Purple Rain" and "Joy in Repetition", funky bass guitar in "Face Down/ Kiss" and some brilliant dancing including the famous splits during "Gett off". Prince is also seen playing the drums which was common during the tours but only captured in "Sign of the times" concert video.
His performance of "American Woman" with Lenny Kravitz is everything the song should have been.
The camera work and sound captures the party atmosphere at a Prince concert but would have been enhanced by a widescreen format. The last performance of "1999" is a bit throwaway as if he could not wait to get rid of performing it.
This video does not have the energy of "Sign of the Times" or "Lovesexy", and for those fans who never saw Prince at his peak during the late 1980's and early 1990's then these videos show him at his best. "Rave to the Joy Fantastic" does have enough of the true Prince flavour to satisfy his older fans and introduce the new ones but will never capture that awesome feeling of seeing him when he really was a one man musical revolution before the confusing name games and Warner Brothers dispute. There is only one Prince.
