Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Prince's galvanising performance Live at the Aladdin demonstrates that he really is one of the great talents of the last quarter-century, a fact easily obscured by the sheer volume and varying quality of his recorded output, not to mention his weird behaviour. The guy has always had a preternatural ability to channel R&B and rock legends such as Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix and James Brown (compare this performance's amazing "Money Don't Matter 2 Night/The Work"); now he's added more sophisticated flavours to the mix as well, ranging from George Benson to Steely Dan and Weather Report, and all without sacrificing his own voice. Add to that covers of the Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (really), all played by Prince and his smokin', skin-tight band, and what you get is one of the best shows of 2002, or any other year. It's extraordinary. --Sam Graham

Flawless. Perfect. Incredable.5
I am sorry to admit I got rather swept along on what other people had to say about prince of late, i.e. "he's not as good as he used to be" or "I liked Purple Rain but his new stuff is a little odd". I actually started to listen to the opinion of other people rather than check out his new stuff for myself. Thankfully this DVD shook me firmly by the funkbone and woke me up again. After I've submitted this message, I'm clicking over to his site to buy all the albums I've missed since the 'Beautiful Experience'. And this DVD will make you want to rush out and do the same. It's tear-jerkingly perfect. At one point I burst into tears with sheer joy at the sound of the band. This is how all music should be made. The DVD audio is crystal clear and very well recorded. I hope beyond hope however that the MPEG artifacts on the actual video track are mearly a fault with my PC video card and not visable on a TV-DVD player, because they are distracting. But never mind that. It's Prince & the NPG really REALLY going for it! Live! Buy it! Now!

Prince- musical genius but unfortunately DVD amateur2
Prince is indeed a musical genius. There is no doubting that and muscially his concert at the aladdin, Las vegas is further testimony to that....not that we really needed further proof.

HOWEVER he definately is lacking with respect to his production of DVDs. This is unfortunately a really poor quality DVD - the sound and picture quality is really well below acceptable standards nowadays. I almost felt as though it was produced with the help of a few friends - one who stood on the stage with a camcorder to take close ups and another who stood at the back of the concert hall to take long distance out of focus views of the man himself. I did wonder whether the disappointing quality was in fact to give the viewer a taste of what it was like to be at the concert....simply because the distant views were often partially obstructed by the heads of the people in front..shame I wasn't really there - I could have asked them to sit down!

Overall it is a disappointing purchase simply because although he gives an great performance with classics like 'take me with you' and 'strange relationship' and the excellent 'push and pull' with Nikki Costa, you are totally distracted by the poor visual effects.

GOOD REPORT BUT AVERAGE QUALITY4
Yeah! I usually use 5 stars 2 describe Prince's work (and I really feel every work deserves 5 stars) but this time it's different. If u have attended one of the many concerts from the One Nite Alone Tour u know what I mean... it was probably one of the best Prince's tours and every concert was superb. When I heard that a DVD was gonna be released I really loved it!. This DVD contains a good report about the contents of the One Nite Alone shows. Jazz mixed with funk, soul shaking hands with instrumental. The high talented performance of Eric Leeds, Maceo Parker and Sheila E. (Pay special attention 2 her while she's performing The Ride on the drums) And the special appeareance by Nikka Costa in Push And Pull (By the way, listen 2 Prince's guitar). U even have a new track called U Want Me and I tell u: This song needs a new album. U can see Prince relaxed and enjoying every moment of the show. A very intelligent mixture between jazz and funk. Something different but as good as other tours. The only complaint is about the quality of image. (Regrettable 4 a DVD, I guess NPGMC didn't work 2 much on this subject) and the quality of sound. Did somebody on NPGMC think about volume adjusting?. U can get deaf hearing Pop Life and then suddenly u have 2 adjust your TV Volume 2 the highest because u can hardly hear "Gotta Broken Heart Again" (By the way, this one is recomposed as a jazz piece. Incredible). The show itself is great as a concert and as a report of the One Nite Alone Tour. Maybe my only complaint is that it doesn't contain the entire show but some songs from it. If u have seen Rave Un2 The Year 2000 u realize that this DVD playing time is shorter (only 80 minutes) and with such a good music this is not enough time 2 enjoy Prince's genius completely. Anyway, if u hesitate about buying the DVD don't do it. U'll see a very different Prince but not worse, the genius is still over there. Peace And Be Wild!.
