This is the Prince you've always wanted to see!5
What an amazing performer and entertainer Prince truly is; and this is him at his magical best! Every track is a joy - absolutely no fillers. The pleasure in performing is clear, and Prince's energy takes you through this concert in what seems like minutes.
Add to this performances and collaborations from artists such as Lenny Kravitz and The Time - "What time is it?!" - and this makes up for a Rave to outshine any of the new millenium.
The only downside - I WASN'T THERE!!!
Buy this DVD...You thank me for it!

A Funky Gig with Raw Musicianship!3
Prince - Rave Un2 The Year 2000 is a recorded live performance. By any standards this is a rocking set but for Prince it is a little below average. He absolutely ruins "Purple Rain" and he gives us a religious reworking of his classic rocker "The Cross" by calling it "The Christ". I find the preachy religious stuff a little too much to take. If he is so saintly why does he charge loyal fans for after show concerts tickets and then not show up? While playing "Gett Off" he can't bring himself to say "22 positions in a one night stand" as if he is ashamed of his own lyric!

Of course he has the best back-up band possible and they sure know how to funk but more often than not the jams become a fight for space and the musicianship suffers for it. Lenny Kravitz is a victim too, as his version of "Fly Away" is much too fast for him to give a solid interpretation. "Purple House" a Jimi Hendrix inspired blues number fell completely flat after the opening chords and it took until Prince's inspired guitar solo to gain impetus. Sheila E is remarkable on the drum kit but the camera angles chosen don't allow us to see her incredible dexterity.

The concert as a whole feels like a cut and paste job. A series of different nights edited together and as a result the whole set does not jell as energy levels are constantly up and down.

For my money Prince - Live At The Aladdin - Las Vegas [2003] is a far better concert as far as musicianship is concerned.

The Extras include a rapidly edited set of interviews where band members tell of there faith in God.
Do you think Prince only employs those of his own faith or do they lie to get the job?

A bit of a mess3
This DVD was recorded at a show Prince put on in his Paisley Park complex in Minneapolis, held on New Year's Eve 1999. Initially the omens are good, as Prince launches into a fairly blistering medley of hits, but after only a few minutes it seems to deteriorate and becomes fairly dull. Other artists pop up (The Time, Lenny Kravitz etc.) and play some of their stuff, and Prince skips lyrics he no longer sings due to his religious beliefs (so "The Cross" becomes "The Christ"). If you want a Prince DVD buy the "Sign O The Times" film - this one is worth a look, but not worth the investment.
