Synopsis
An explosive new thriller from the bestselling Faye Kellerman featuring LA detective Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus. At 8.15am, a small green suburb of Los Angeles is turned into a fiery inferno by a commuter plane crash, plunging the city's emergency services into a major crisis. A month later, one mystery from the wreckage still remains unsolved. A woman's body - initially thought to be a stewardess - is instead revealed to be an undiscovered homicide, decades old. Who is this nameless victim? And why is the stewardess still missing? As they begin to unravel years of deception, Lieutenant Peter Decker and his team come closer and closer to the shocking truth -- and a confrontation with a vicious killer.
From the Inside Flap
The Return of Peter Decker & Rina Lazarus.
At 8.15am, a commuter plane carrying forty-seven passengers crashes into a building in Los Angeles. The LAPD's first priority is to allay fears that this is another terrorist outrage. Their second is to explain the bizarre mystery they discover in the debris.
An extra, unidentified, body has been found in the wreckage - but there is no trace of another woman who was supposedly on the flight.
To answer the riddle, Lieutenant Peter Decker and his team will have to dig back through three decades of tragic history to uncover the evil behind these crimes ... and what they find challenges their most basic assumptions about truth, guilt and justice.

A corker of a whodunnit
Perhaps because I'm new to Kellerman's work, the dialoge didn't always sound completely natural, and there was certainly too much irrelevant detail, but this is the best mystery I've read since I finished the last Rebus. I'll put that down to the fact that it's a solid "whodunnit" police procedural, with characters and scenarios that don't require too much suspension of disbelief. When so many books in this genre are padded-out and patched-up with contrived action scences, that's like finding the proverbial diamond in a coal mine. I'm certainly looking forward to Cold Case.
Lovely to meet the family again!
Although not one of the best thrillers that Faye Kellerman has written, this was, nonetheless an enjoyable read. After a break of about two years (her last book was more historical) it was lovely to be involved in the Rina/Pete Decker extended family - including his Police colleagues. Mind you, time has passed! Hannah is no longer the sweet little girl that she was - she ha grown to be one of those dreaded creatures ... a teenager!
The story was gripping too. A terrifying plane crash over L.A. - followed by a missing body results in a deep mystery - especially once a body totally unrelated to the case turns up!
Problem 1 - whose is the body?
Problem 2 - who murdered her?
Problem 3 - where is the stewardess? Is she dead, and if so, who murdered her?
Pete travels all over the area, clocking up the airmiles and spending many sleepless nights; ending up with an intriguing and unexpected solution.
If you are at a loose end and are looking for a light, enjoyable read; give it a go. It's a good, light read.
A Very Good Read
I thought this book was excellent. It did keep you guessing until the last chapter and although I couldn't work out who 'did it' the ending just didn't seem quite as I'd expected. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good police thriller and the personal link to family life was better than the usual lonely cop living a life full of work, fags and booze. It's well worth ordering though and I didn't really want to put it down.
